Burton Joyce, Meadows — River Trent
Burton Joyce Meadows is a members-only River Trent section run by Ashfield Angling Club, forming part of the club’s Stoke Bardolph and Burton Joyce venue. It’s a less-developed, overgrown bit of river where you may need to sort your own swim — proper wild Trent bank fishing.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The Meadows sits within the Stoke Bardolph and Burton Joyce River Trent venue, alongside the club’s Pylons and Cherry Orchard sections.
- Access is from the Burton Joyce/Stoke Bardolph side. The Burton Joyce railway station area is listed as NG14 5AP, while the Ferry Boat Inn area is NG14 5HX.
- This isn’t the club’s day-ticket road stretch. Day tickets are strictly unavailable above or below that road section, so Meadows is members only.
- The upper Stoke Bardolph river is described as unspoiled and overgrown, with overhanging willows. Expect a more natural feel rather than tidy, numbered pegs.
- Some of the less-developed river sections may need you to make your own peg. Keep the pruning sensible — remove no more undergrowth than you actually need.
- The club advises parking for the upper section in the anglers’ car park before Stoke Lock Wood. Some access tracks are public footpaths, so vehicles aren’t allowed along them.
- It’s roughly a 200-yard walk from the parking area to the upper section. Travel light or take a barrow, especially if you’re carrying feeder kit and a full day’s gear.
- The Trent here should suit flexible river work: trotting when the pace allows, or feeder fishing into the crease and steadier inside water. Look for depth, slack edges and cover around the willows.
- The venue table lists carp, pike, zander, barbel, chub, roach, bream and more for Stoke Bardolph. The club also says night fishing is permitted, with the river closed season applying.
- Mind the local dog walkers on the access lane, drive slowly, lock the gate at the top and take every scrap of litter home. Bob on etiquette matters here.
Methods: A flexible river approach looks the ticket: trot the steadier water when conditions allow, or work a feeder into the crease, depth and slack edges. Give the willow cover and quieter margins a proper look, especially when the river has a bit of colour.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
