River Trent — Rampton Island
Rugged, off-the-beaten-track fishing on the tidal River Trent, with SAA running the Rampton Island stretch. It’s proper wild country, so go prepared and don’t tackle it alone if you can help it.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The section starts at a white SAA marker post and runs upstream to just past the island, where the limit is marked by a farmer’s fence.
- Access is from Rampton village along Torksey Ferry Road. The track is roughly 1.5 miles from the village and is narrow and potholed, so expect a bit of faff.
- Club signs point the way, but this isn’t a polished roadside fishery. It’s rugged, off the beaten track and suited to anglers who like their fishing wild.
- Parking is currently roadside at the pumphouse. Leave room for other vehicles and farm machinery — blocking the way is a definite no-no.
- Getting to the water means tackling a stile, walking the flood-bank and crossing a dyke. In winter, that dyke can cut anglers off, so keep an eye on conditions.
- This is tidal Trent fishing, with proper river-country character rather than a neat, manicured venue. The checked details don’t specify individual swims, pegs, depths or particular features.
- SAA advises against fishing during flood conditions. Sensible stuff here: keep your phone on you, stay in touch with someone and preferably fish with company.
- The coarse-fish close season runs from 15 March through 15 June inclusive. Plan your visit outside those dates.
- Night fishing is allowed, but it needs a separate SAA night permit. First-time night permits are restricted to members with at least two full years of membership.
- The club lists barbel, chub, roach, perch, bream, pike, zander, carp and smaller species across its waters. No specific target species are confirmed for this stretch.
Methods: No specific tactics are given in the checked details, so match your approach to the tidal flow and conditions on the day. The big priorities are safe access, watching the weather and not fishing in flood conditions.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
