River Cherwell – Hampton Poyle
A cracking, roughly one-mile River Cherwell stretch at Hampton Poyle, winding through lovely Oxfordshire farmland. It’s club water with very few pegs, so the game is roving around, finding gaps in the greenery and picking a swim that looks right.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is proper countryside river fishing, with the Cherwell meandering through farmland and a beautifully quiet setting around Hampton Poyle.
- There are very few established pegs, so don’t expect a neat row of platforms. It’s much more about walking, looking and choosing your own water.
- A roving approach is the order of the day. Keep an eye out for gaps in the vegetation, comfortable spots and bits of river that give you a clean cast.
- Trees, weed beds and overhanging shrubs are the key features. Lovely cover, but it can make the fishing a bit of a faff, so travel light and stay mobile.
- There’s a good head of roach. When the river has a bit of colour, they feed well, making those more carrying conditions worth a proper look.
- Chub and perch are specifically noted targets here, and both can reach specimen size. That’s enough to keep you searching the likely cover rather than sitting it out in one swim.
- The season runs from 16 June to 14 March. The river is shut from 15 March to 15 June inclusive, so check the dates before packing the tackle bag.
- This sort of water suits a flexible approach: work along the bank, watch the flow and fish the crease, cover and quieter-looking spots you find on the day.
- There are no night tickets and no night fishing. Access is through Hampton Poyle, with the club giving the parking location as a farmyard and postcode OX5 2QF.
Methods: Go mobile and fish to what you find. Roach are worth targeting when the water is coloured, while chub and perch call for a careful, cover-focused approach around trees, weed beds and overhanging shrubs.
