We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a proper river venue rather than a stocked fishery. The listing says the water is not stocked, so it’s all about the natural river and what’s in front of you.
  • The stretch sits in a rural setting beside the Oxford Canal around Shipton-on-Cherwell. A handy bit of local waterway character, with river and canal running close together.
  • Near Shipton Weir, the River Cherwell and Oxford Canal run alongside each other, and the canal uses the river channel for about 1 km. That makes this a particularly interesting bit of the valley.
  • Chub, barbel and bream are the named species for this exact stretch. Nice mix of river fish, with options for both moving-water and quieter-water approaches.
  • It’s coarse fishing, and fly fishing isn’t the only permitted method. Rod, pole and line are allowed, giving you a fair bit of flexibility on the bank.
  • The coarse-river season runs from 16 June to 14 March. Make sure your visit sits inside those dates before sorting the tackle.
  • Day tickets are available to non-members, so you don’t need to join BDAA just to have a go. BDAA has been running since 1888, so it’s a long-established club.
  • Normally, one rod may be used. A second rod is allowed for pike fishing only, baited with live or dead bait.
  • Keep it tidy and respectful: close gates, don’t damage banks, fences or crops, and remove litter within 5 metres of your fishing position. Dogs and guns aren’t permitted when fishing.

Methods: This is a coarse river where rod, pole and line are permitted, and fly fishing isn’t the only option. The named species are chub, barbel and bream, with a second rod allowed only for pike fishing using live or dead bait.
