River Cherwell — Steeple Aston Angling Club water
Steeple Aston Angling Club’s Cherwell water is a proper rural coarse-fishing stretch in the Cherwell Valley, east of the village. It’s club water rather than a day-ticket venue, with patience very much the name of the game.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Heyford Bridge on Live River Levels
The lowdown
- The club leases several sections of the River Cherwell near Steeple Aston, so this isn’t one single, neatly packaged swim. There are a few bits to get your head around.
- It’s lowland Cherwell country over clay, with generally turbid water. Expect a natural, earthy-looking river rather than gin-clear trout water.
- The setting is cracking and properly rural, with meadows, woodland and river channels around the valley. The Cherwell and Oxford Canal run close together here too.
- This is coarse fishing, not a trout-fishing operation. The Cherwell in this area is regarded as better suited to coarse angling than fly fishing.
- Chub, barbel, roach and perch are reported from the Cherwell system in this area, giving you a decent mix of river targets to think about.
- The official club line is that patience is the main skill required. No need to rush about like a blue-arsed fly; settle in and work a swim properly.
- The water is open from 16 June until 14 March. That gives you the usual close-season pause before the river gets another proper run of attention.
- Steeple Aston sits above the valley, with footpaths offering views across the water meadows. It’s a handy orientation point, although no dedicated angler car park is stated.
- Membership is open to all from age 10. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, so younger anglers need to plan the trip with that in mind.
Methods: Keep it patient and adaptable. Trotting or a feeder approach should suit a lowland coarse river, with the crease, steadier glides and any depth or cover worth a careful look.
