Nuneham Courtenay — Nuneham Railway Bridge (end of AOAA water / private estate)

A cracking 500-metre slice of Thames on the private Nuneham Courtenay estate, run exclusively by Thame Angling Club. It’s club water only, with chub, roach, perch and skimmers on the cards, but you’ll need to book before turning up.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is private-estate fishing, so don’t go wandering. Stick firmly to the designated areas along the River Thames at Nuneham Courtenay.
  • The club has roughly 500 metres of river here. The published info describes open-bank access rather than a run of fixed pegs, so expect to find your own swim.
  • There’s a decent mixed coarse line-up. Chub are reported to 5 lb, roach to 2 lb and perch to 3 lb. Proper handy fish if you get the conditions right.
  • The water also holds a good head of skimmers, with the club hoping that larger bream are present too. A feeder or float approach could be worth a go when they’re on the munch.
  • For chub and perch, look for the steadier bits and any crease you can pick out along the bank. A bit of colour in the river can make them properly confident.
  • Trotting is the obvious shout where the flow allows, while a light feeder gives you a tidy way to search the swim when the river is pushing through.
  • Visits must be booked because space is limited. Parking is limited too, so sort the arrangements before setting off rather than having a last-minute faff.
  • The access track to the pegs is closed to all vehicles from 15 November 2025 until further notice. Park in the car park at the field entrance, then walk to your swim.
  • That vehicle restriction is repeated when booking. Keep your current club permit and Environment Agency rod licence with you, and stay inside the permitted area or you could be removed and banned from the club.

Methods: A flexible mixed-coarse approach makes sense here: trot where the flow behaves, then switch to feeder work for skimmers, bream and searching the steadier water. Chub and perch are the cheeky bonus fish, especially when there’s a touch of colour.
