Abermule — Lymm AC, River Severn
Abermule is Lymm Angling Club’s upper Severn stretch in Powys — a proper all-round fishery with a strong game-fishing feel. Expect gliding runs, deeper holding pools and a nice mix of wild trout, quality grayling and coarse fish.

The lowdown
- • This is primarily a game fishery, so it’s a smart-looking bit of upper Severn water rather than a flat-out coarse venue.
- • The river has gliding runs to work through, with deeper holding pools offering a change of pace and somewhere for fish to sit.
- • Wild brown trout are present, and the club also reports quality grayling. Seasonal salmon aren’t uncommon either.
- • There’s a coarse-fishing side to it too, with dace, chub and the occasional barbel named by the club.
- • The mix makes Abermule a fine all-round fishery. There’s enough variety to keep things interesting as conditions change.
- • In steadier-looking water, the glides should be the obvious areas to look at. The deeper pools are the natural holding spots when fish want a bit more cover from the flow.
- • The club lists access via Glan Hafron Bridge, north of an off-road bridge over the Montgomery Canal. No coded lock is needed at this access.
- • Parking is advised in a lay-by north of the bridge. The listed access postcode is SY15 6NA, with OS reference SO 16831 96685 and sat-nav coordinates 52.5613753, -3.22812585.
- • Abermule access comes through club membership rather than a listed public day ticket. Membership cards are electronic, with water information available through the club website and members area.
Methods: A versatile stretch for game-fishing approaches on the gliding runs and deeper pools, with coarse options where the dace, chub and occasional barbel are showing. Pick the water to suit the conditions and keep an eye on the flow.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
