Abernant
Abernant is a cracking Upper Wye beat near Aberedw, downstream of Builth Wells, with just under a mile of mostly left-bank fishing. It’s a proper mixed fishery, with salmon pools, trout and grayling water, plus chub and dace.

The lowdown
- This is a picturesque haugh with pasture, ancient woodland and beaches tucked alongside the river. Proper scenic stuff.
- The main named salmon pools are Lady Alexander’s Catch and Abernant Stream. Edw Pool and Stone Catch are also marked fishing places.
- The riverbed is mostly gravel, so wading is generally fairly kind. Chest waders are required if you want to get the best from the beat.
- Stone Catch and Edw Pool are the trickier bits. Expect more boulders and bedrock there, with wading difficult in places.
- The fishing is mostly from the left bank, and the beat runs for just under a mile. Three tickets is the daily maximum, keeping things nicely spaced out.
- There’s a 200-metre walk from the parking spot to the middle section of the river, so pack sensibly and expect a little legwork.
- Salmon fishing is catch-and-release at all times. Trout are fly-only, while the trout and grayling limit is two fish.
- Evening tickets are half price from 1 May and after 1pm on the day of fishing. Fishing starts at 5pm on those tickets.
- Stud or studded/felt soles are mandatory. The current can make a difference, especially around the rougher bedrock and boulder-filled swims.
- Dogs are welcome but must stay under control. The beat also operates a wash-off policy, so leave the kit clean and sorted after fishing.
Methods: For salmon, work the named pools with suitable fly tackle and take care around the rougher wading. Trout are fly-only, while winter grayling and the coarse chub and dace offer other options when conditions suit.
