The lowdown

  • This is Fishing Passport water run by the Wye & Usk Foundation, around 2 miles south of Rhayader and roughly 10 miles north of Builth Wells.
  • The beat runs for more than a mile and is double-bank for most of its length. Handy stuff when you’re looking to get on the crease or find a quieter swim.
  • There are several named salmon pools, with bank fishing possible along most of them. Some of the bigger pools need a good wade to cover properly.
  • The river changes character nicely. The lower section has dry-fly flats, while upstream you’ll find pocket water and plunge pools. A proper bit of Upper Wye variety.
  • Riffles and deep pools give you plenty to work with. Some pools are extremely deep, so don’t charge in blind — take care and pick your wading line sensibly.
  • Trout and grayling fishing is offered throughout the year where seasonally permitted. Fly fishing only, so it’s all about presenting cleanly rather than reaching for the feeder.
  • Felt and studded soles are recommended by the holder. That’s worth taking seriously with the deeper pools, quicker water and wading needed in places.
  • There are three parking spaces. Two are close to the river, while the third involves a 328-yard walk down to the water. Four tickets is the daily maximum.
  • The surrounding water is scenic and wildlife-rich, and the holder offers catch and release for all species. Dogs aren’t allowed, and the beat operates a wash-off policy.

Methods: Fly fishing only, with dry-fly work looking a natural fit on the lower flats and careful searching through the riffles, pocket water and plunge pools. Wading is essential for covering some larger pools, but take care around the very deep water.
