The lowdown

  • The beat sits on the Upper River Wye, about 2 miles south of Rhayader and around 10 miles north of Builth Wells. Handy enough, without being a faff to find.
  • It’s a mixed single-bank and double-bank stretch. Above the bridge is single bank, while below the bridge opens out to double-bank fishing.
  • There are several salmon pools to work through, with bank fishing possible along most of them. Some pools are extremely deep, so take care around the edges.
  • The riverbed is a mix of bedrock and gravel. Wading can unlock extra water, but the operator recommends felt or studded soles — sensible kit for this sort of riverbed.
  • Grayling are the big draw here. The beat is particularly noted for them, and specimen fish of 50 centimetres or more may be encountered. That’s a proper cheeky fish.
  • Salmon are present too, with the better salmon fishing generally coming later in the season. Keep an eye on the pools and likely holding water as conditions change.
  • This is fly-fishing only, with catch and release applying to all species. National fishing byelaws still need to be followed, so don’t cut corners.
  • The fishery is described as well maintained, and the parking area is only about 35 metres — roughly 39 yards — from the beat. Bob on for carrying tackle.
  • The current owners reserve the right to fish the beat, so exclusivity isn’t guaranteed. There are no more than four tickets available per day.
  • Dogs aren’t allowed. Professional guides must book a rod for themselves as well as for their clients, while the local owners offer guiding through The Fishing Passport.

Methods: It’s fly-only, with salmon pools to target later in the season and grayling providing the main attraction. Fish from the bank across most pools, or wade carefully to reach extra water where conditions allow.
