The lowdown

  • This is a proper mixed beat, with both single-bank and double-bank fishing. Plenty of variety, so you’re not just flogging the same sort of water all day.
  • The Wye is around 70 yards wide in places and runs over slate bedrock. Expect a lively mix of deep pools, gravel runs, pocket water, deeper channels and fast white water.
  • There are dry-fly flats for the delicate stuff, plus cracking faster water where a well-presented fly can get noticed. The beat is described as suitable for fly fishers of all levels.
  • Wading is relatively difficult, so take it steady. Felt or studded soles are required, and some pools have fishing boards to make getting across the river a bit easier.
  • There are 17 named salmon pools, giving you a fair bit to explore. Look for the crease between the quicker flow and the steadier water around the pool edges.
  • Wild brown trout and grayling are spread throughout the beat. Trout up to 8 pounds have been recorded in recent years, which is a proper incentive to stay sharp.
  • Fly fishing is specified for trout. Grayling can also be targeted by trotting between 18 October and 2 March, handy when the river has a bit of colour and the fish are on the munch.
  • The wider fish mix includes Atlantic salmon, chub, dace, pike and occasional barbel. Salmon are catch-and-release, while a two-fish limit applies to trout and grayling.
  • There are two parking spots close to the river. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under control, and the beat operates a wash-off policy, so clean your kit before moving on.

Methods: Fly fishing is the main game, with dry flies, standard fly approaches and careful work through the pools, glides and faster runs. Trotting for grayling is permitted from 18 October to 2 March.
