Hay-on-Wye — Hay Warren Anglers (Town Water / The Warren)
A cracking mile of right-bank River Wye at The Warren, Hay-on-Wye, with a proper mix of quick water and slower glides. It’s a coarse fishery with barbel, chub, pike and a handy spread of other species, plus small trout and good winter grayling.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The beat starts at Steeple Pool below Warren Cottage and runs upstream to the end of the stone wall at Lap Stone Pool, near The Burlands.
- It’s approximately a mile long, all on the right bank. Plenty of room to explore, with the water switching between faster runs and slower, steadier sections.
- That mixed flow should give you options. Look for the crease where the quicker water meets the glide, then fish the pace that suits your approach.
- Barbel, chub, pike, roach, perch, bream and dace are named for the stretch. Small trout are present too, while good grayling are reported in winter.
- For coarse fishing, the season runs from 16 June to 14 March the following year. That’s your window for trotting, feeder work and picking apart the quieter swims.
- Winter is the time mentioned for grayling, while the holder also identifies separate trout and salmon seasons. The stretch hasn’t been fished for salmon for many years.
- It’s a proper river setting rather than a tidy commercial puddle: The Warren is a riverside meadow, used for recreation and designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wales.
- A valid Welsh rod licence is needed for anglers aged 12 or over. Do check the holder’s fishing information document before setting off, as it includes the detailed rules, safety notes and beat map.
- Tickets and full details are available from F.W. Golesworthy & Sons in Broad Street, Hay-on-Wye. Ring 01497 820491 for the fishing details and avoid a needless faff.
Methods: A versatile bit of river for trotting the steady water, working a feeder through the deeper-looking glides or searching the faster runs for barbel and chub. Keep an eye on the crease and change approach as the flow varies.
