Llanstephan
Llanstephan is a cracking two-mile, single-bank beat on the Wye, around eight miles downstream of Builth Wells. It mixes salmon pools, trouty rapids and proper coarse water, with big chub the main draw.

The lowdown
- The fishing is on the left bank of the Wye, with roughly two miles to explore. It’s single-bank fishing, so nice and straightforward once you’re on the beat.
- Llanstephan rotates with the opposite-bank Llangoed Beat. The changeover is at 1pm, so check which side is fishing before setting off.
- There are several salmon pools through the beat. Salmon fishing is available on a full-day ticket, with all salmon released at all times.
- For trout, head for the rapids below Llangoed Pool or fish the upper half of the beat. The limit for trout and grayling is two fish.
- The coarse water runs from the tail of Orchard downstream to Llangoed Pool. This is the chub section, and there are plenty of fish in the 2–5lb bracket, with larger chub present too.
- Dace, occasional barbel and pike are also named for the stretch. A lively mix, then, rather than a one-species plod.
- The beat has a proper variety of river character: salmon pools, faster trout water and slower coarse sections. Pick the water to suit the conditions and keep moving between swims.
- A feeder or trotting approach should suit the coarse sections, while lighter tackle and a careful look at the rapids make sense for trout. Salmon fishing is offered by full-day ticket.
- There’s a maximum of two tickets per day. The beat has a no-dogs rule and operates a wash-off policy, so factor that into the day’s faff.
- There is no beat split between 18 October and 2 March. Online availability and booking information are provided through The Fishing Passport’s Wye Booking Office.
Methods: Trotting and feeder tactics suit the coarse water from the tail of Orchard to Llangoed Pool. Trout anglers can work the rapids below Llangoed Pool and the upper half of the beat, while salmon fishing is available on a full-day ticket.
