The lowdown
- The Rectory Fishery sits on the Upper Wye near Llyswen, roughly 1.2 km downstream of Boughrood Bridge. It’s a proper river beat with a mix of character and named water.
- The main river includes Rectory Pool, Mill Pool, Gravel Catch and Bridge Flats. Current beat maps supply the exact boundaries and pool details, so don’t guess your way onto the bank.
- This bit of the Wye gets broader and more majestic below Llyswen towards Glasbury. Expect flow-dependent fishing, with fast runs, deeper pools, rocky channels and gravelly water.
- There’s a good spread of fishing here, with salmon, trout, grayling and coarse-fishing opportunities on the main-river section. The river can change mood quickly with water levels.
- The Rectory season-rod information allows three salmon or trout/grayling/coarse rods per day. There’s also a hut available to anglers, which is handy when the Welsh weather turns cheeky.
- Fly-only rules apply during the trout season on Foundation water unless the beat-specific rules say otherwise. Trotting a maggot is allowed on some beats from October to March, so check the current beat rules.
- The grayling season runs from 16 June to 14 March inclusive. That gives the colder months a proper bit of appeal, especially when the river has a touch of colour and the fish are on the munch.
- Down at Dderw Farm, the Dderw Pools are two coarse-fishing pools associated with bream, tench, carp and roach. Carp into double figures are reported, so there’s more than just a cheeky puddle-roach session here.
- The Dderw Pools were formerly day-ticket waters and are now reportedly a syndicate. Current ticket prices aren’t officially published, so contact Dderw Farm before making the trip.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: On the main river, fly fishing is the key approach during the trout season, with trotting a maggot allowed on some beats from October to March. The pools are the more obvious coarse option for carp, tench, bream and roach.
