The lowdown
- • The beat stretches for just under two miles, so there’s plenty of river to explore. It’s split into two sections, with a mix of double-bank and single-bank fishing.
- • Upstream, things are relatively open and there’s little to snag a back cast. Handy stuff for settling in with the fly rod and getting comfortable with the flow.
- • Downstream, the character changes. The banks become more tree-lined, so casting needs a bit more thought and accuracy. Proper river fishing rather than chucking it anywhere.
- • The lower section includes bedrock and pocket water. Expect broken, lively flow and fishy little patches where the water pushes through the rocks.
- • Wading can be tricky in parts of the lower section. Take your time, pick your route and don’t force it when the river’s carrying a bit more pace.
- • Brown trout are on the menu, with winter grayling fishing available too. Atlantic salmon are also listed among the species at the location.
- • It’s fly-fishing only, so this is one for the rod, line and carefully placed fly. The open upstream section should make working through the water a bit less of a faff.
- • There are three listed parking spots, each with a very short walk to the river. Bob on for keeping the tackle-hauling to a minimum.
- • Availability is capped at two tickets per day, giving the beat a quieter feel. Evening fishing starts from 4pm, with evening tickets available from 1 May after 1pm on the day of fishing.
Methods: Fly fishing only. Work the open upstream water with room for a back cast, then take a more careful, mobile approach through the lower section’s pocket water, bedrock and tighter tree-lined banks.
