The lowdown
- This is approximately 1,000 metres (1,094 yards) of double-bank fishing. Nobody else has the right to fish from the opposite bank, so you can work the water properly.
- Maesllwch was historically renowned as an early spring salmon fishery. These days, salmon are more regularly caught later in the season.
- Llanthomas Pool is quite shallow and comes into its own in high water for salmon. Chub and barbel are likely catches here too.
- Keep an eye out for shoals of large grayling in Llanthomas Pool. They may be present even in flood conditions, which is a handy little bit of river knowledge.
- The Watling to Llanthomas section includes Pwll Dwrgi Pool, sitting below Watling Pool. It is also known as the Pulpit.
- The Larder is a large, deep-water area on a bend and acts as a holding pool for salmon. A proper feature when fish are using the slower, deeper water.
- The Pulpit and Larder suit spinning or coarse fishing when conditions are suitable. Pick the approach to match the water rather than forcing it.
- Watling Pool offers fly fishing, particularly for trout and salmon. A bit of variation there, with the chance to switch tactics as the river changes.
- There is also a backstream. The official advice is to use one short rod and a centrepin — bob on for keeping things tidy in tighter water.
- Species named for the stretch include salmon, trout, chub, barbel, grayling, pike, perch and dace. Some are caught in summer and/or autumn, while others are caught all year round.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Fly fishing is highlighted for trout and salmon at Watling Pool. Spinning or coarse fishing suits the Pulpit and Larder in suitable conditions, while the backstream calls for one short rod and a centrepin.
