Newbridge-on-Wye (Izaak Walton Angling Society)

A cracking, unspoilt Upper Wye venue through the Llysdinam Estate, with fishing controlled by Izaak Walton Angling Society on agreed member dates. Chub, trout and particularly notable grayling are on offer, with coarse fishing reckoned capable of producing the bigger weights.

The lowdown

  • This is members-only fishing, with access on notified dates agreed each year between the Society and the Llysdinam Estate. Don’t just turn up on a whim — give the Society Secretary prior notice.
  • The meeting point is Brynwern Bridge. From Newbridge-on-Wye, head south towards Builth Wells, turn onto the minor road at the village edge, then follow the further turn down to the bridge.
  • Parking is off-road by the bridge. You may be directed onto the grassy verge beside it, or, when conditions allow, into the field by the bridge.
  • Attendance is usually pretty modest, commonly around four to six anglers. That gives the place a quiet, low-faff feel rather than a crowded match-day buzz.
  • Both coarse and fly fishing are allowed on the Society’s fishing days. One of the ten annual dates is reserved exclusively for fly fishing, so check the fixture details before packing the feeder gear.
  • The Society says coarse fishing can produce larger weights than fly fishing here. Legitimate coarse-fishing baits are listed in the fixture information, so stick to those rather than winging it.
  • Grayling are the star turn, with chub and trout also named for the venue. The Society does not fish for salmon here; salmon remain the preserve of the Estate.
  • Keep an eye on the river. Fishing can be cancelled or called off when the Wye is in spate, and compensation releases from the Elan Valley can alter conditions and fish activity.
  • The river-bed rock can be slippery, so metal-studded waders are recommended. Proper sensible kit for a lively river, especially when you’re moving between swims.
  • The Society has attended by invitation since the 1950s. That long-running arrangement means being tidy, respectful and bang on the agreed access details matters.

Methods: For coarse anglers, use the legitimate baits listed on the fixture information and look to build a weight. Fly fishing is also permitted, with one annual day set aside solely for it; keep tabs on flow and cancellations before setting off.
