The lowdown

  • This is a private rural fishery within the Plas Gwyn Estate at Aberedw. Quiet, handy and nicely looked after.
  • The beat runs for 425 yards, with fishing from the left bank only. No faff working out which side you’re meant to be on.
  • The riverbed is a mix of bedrock and gravel, giving the stretch a bit of character under the wading boots.
  • There’s a promising salmon pool, so salmon anglers have a proper feature to focus on rather than just wandering about hopefully.
  • Trout and grayling are available, while the coarse fishing is for chub and dace. A nice mixed bag of river sport.
  • Chest waders are advisable. Studded or felt-soled footwear is mandatory, so don’t turn up in ordinary wellies and expect to crack on.
  • Access to the water is straightforward, with easy walking down to the edge. The waterline is maintained and groomed too.
  • The stretch offers up to two rods per day, which keeps things fairly limited and gives the beat a more private feel.
  • There’s ample parking, a dedicated fishing hut and a picnic area with a table. Bob on for a full day by the river.
  • All species are catch-and-release. The official description doesn’t confirm night fishing, so treat it as unconfirmed rather than planning a cheeky dusk session.

Methods: The facts don’t prescribe a particular approach, but this mixed upper-Wye beat suits anglers targeting the salmon pool, trout and grayling water, or working the coarse swims for chub and dace. Chest waders and the correct studded or felt-soled footwear are essential.

Key rules

  • All species are catch-and-release.
  • Standard Wye and Usk Foundation coarse-fishing rules apply.
  • Studded or felt-soled footwear is mandatory.
  • Fishing is from the left bank only.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
