The lowdown
- The Wye stretch runs from roughly a mile south of Rhayader to about four miles north of town.
- It’s a proper mixed bit of river, with natural brown trout, stocked brown trout and grayling all in the mix.
- The Association stocks brown trout every other year, alongside the river’s natural stock.
- Salmon are a local feature too, though they reach the upper parts of the Wye towards the end of the season.
- The A470/A44 trunk road runs alongside the whole stretch, and the Association describes access from the adjacent roads as readily available.
- There’s no peg count or precise swim map given, so expect a natural river rather than a row of numbered pegs. Have a wander and look for likely trout water.
- The character is mixed, with the usual changing river features rather than one uniform beat. Keep an eye out for anything that gives a fish a break from the flow.
- Fly fishing, spinning and worming are all allowed, so there’s room to switch things up when conditions change.
- The trout season runs from 3 March to 30 September. Coarse fishing is listed from 16 June to 14 March.
- A four-fish limit applies to the listed river waters, while catch and release is allowed with barbless hooks. The minimum size limit is 10 inches.
Methods: Fly fishing, spinning and worming are permitted. For trout, work the likely holding water and keep mobile; with a bit of colour or extra flow, spinning or worming gives you a handy change-up. Late in the season, salmon can reach the upper Wye.
