The lowdown

  • This is billed as one of the premier upper-Wye beats, and it’s described as well maintained. Nice bit of river country, with plenty to get stuck into.
  • You’ve got approximately 1.5 miles on the right bank and approximately 1 mile on the left. That’s a sizeable wander, with the advertised combined length coming in at roughly 2.5 miles.
  • Salmon are a big draw here. There are 13 named catches, and fish are reported from a wide range of river flows, so it’s not all about waiting for one magic height.
  • The salmon pool notes are supplied after booking. Handy stuff when you’re trying to work out where to start rather than having a proper faff on the bank.
  • For trout and grayling, there are dry-fly flats, pocket water and runs suited to wet-fly fishing. Bridge Flats and Gravel Catch are both named dry-fly areas.
  • The beat holds good numbers of grayling, and that water stays open through winter. Winter trotting with maggots is specifically available, which sounds bob on when the grayling are on the munch.
  • There’s coarse fishing too, with chub, dace and pike in the mix. The fishery has also produced occasional barbel in recent years.
  • The two named dry-fly areas give you a clear starting point for lighter tactics, while the pocket water and wet-fly runs offer a bit more variety when conditions suit.
  • Two parking spots are advertised close to the river edge. Day tickets can be booked online or by telephone, and season rods are also available.

Methods: For salmon, work the named catches across the prevailing river flow, using the detailed pool notes supplied after booking. Trout and grayling suit dry fly on Bridge Flats and Gravel Catch, with wet fly through the runs and winter maggot trotting for grayling.

Key rules

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
