River

Ty Newydd

Ty Newydd is a cracking, tranquil upper-Wye beat near Erwood, with roughly 1¼ miles of mostly double-bank fishing. It’s proper fly water for salmon, trout and grayling, with quality pools and plenty of room to settle into the river.

The lowdown

  • This is main-river Wye fishing, with the beat sitting about seven miles downstream and south of Builth Wells. The river is around 70 yards wide here, so it feels like a proper bit of water.
  • There’s approximately 1¼ miles to explore, mostly on both banks. No public right of way runs along the beat, which keeps things nicely peaceful.
  • The official description highlights excellent fly fishing for salmon, trout and grayling throughout the length. It’s reckoned suitable for experienced fly fishers and less experienced anglers too.
  • The salmon fishing is described as relatively underfished, despite the beat having quality pools. That sounds like a decent excuse to spend time working the likely lies properly.
  • The beat is tucked away from the main road, with a tranquil feel. Keep an eye out for kingfishers and the occasional otter while moving between swims.
  • Dedicated off-road gated parking is provided. From the parking area, it’s roughly a 200-yard walk to the downstream end of the beat.
  • Boards are present in places, but both sets of planks are reported to be in disrepair. Do not use them. Felt or studded soles are required for wading, with studs specifically required on the boards.
  • A wading staff and belt are recommended, along with a life preserver. Sensible kit for a broad river where footing and flow deserve respect.
  • Erwood is handy for a post-session brew, with the Wheelwright Arms serving food and coffee. Public toilets are also available in the village.

Methods: Fly fishing is the name of the game here, with salmon, trout and grayling the target species. Work the pools and main-river features carefully, and take proper wading kit for the job.
