The lowdown

  • This is a sizeable stretch, running for roughly three miles between Enson and Weston-on-Trent in Staffordshire.
  • The club describes the river as having deep sweeping bends and long pools, so there’s plenty of varied-looking water to get your head around.
  • The banks are high in places, and some swims need care. A long landing-net handle of 3–4 metres is classed as vital by the club.
  • Summer vegetation can get vigorous, so access and getting settled in a swim may need a bit of patience when the greenery is really on the munch.
  • The Trent runs alongside the Trent & Mersey Canal for roughly three miles here. Access is available from the canal and other marked points.
  • The main draw is the strong chub and barbel water. Chub to 6 lb and barbel to 10 lb are reported by the club.
  • The faster runs hold trout and grayling, giving the stretch a bit more variety beyond the deeper, slower-looking pools.
  • With deep pools, sweeping bends and quicker runs all in the mix, it’s the sort of venue where picking the right water matters. Have a good look before committing to a swim.
  • The club’s rules are fairly tight. No groundbait or loose feed on the river, barbless hooks are compulsory, and you can fish with a maximum of two rods.
  • Precise access and parking information is kept in the members area, so there’s no point turning up and having a faff around for an unmarked entrance.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: The club highlights deep pools, sweeping bends and faster runs, with chub, barbel, trout and grayling present. A long 3–4 metre landing-net handle is vital, and river groundbait and loose feed are not allowed.
