We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The fishery sits at Swan Bridge, Pulborough, with access from the small car park. From there, turn right towards the field gate.
- Fishing is on the south bank. The stretch is tidal, so expect the river to change with the tide rather than sitting at one steady level.
- It’s a rural, cattle-grazed bit of river. Nice and open, but the livestock mean gates need shutting properly every time.
- The water is described as tidal and prolific. That gives it plenty of promise when the conditions line up and the fish are on the munch.
- The stretch runs for approximately 1,500 metres, giving anglers a decent bit of bank to explore rather than a tiny cluster of pegs.
- Named fish include roach, chub, dace, perch, bream, gudgeon, eels, pike and carp. There’s also an occasional chance of a sea fish.
- The four-hour car-park restriction is the big practical wrinkle. Overstaying may lead to a penalty charge or wheel clamping, so keep an eye on the clock.
- The coarse-fishing closed season runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. Night fishing isn’t permitted, so this is strictly a daylight session.
- For directions, take the A29 southbound into Pulborough, turn right at the first mini-roundabout and left at the second. Cross Swan Bridge, then turn immediately left into the car park.
Methods: A flexible coarse approach is the sensible starting point on this tidal, mixed-species water. Trotting, feeder work or lighter float fishing can all be considered around the changing flow, with the conditions dictating the swim and tackle.
