We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Apperley Bridge on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is a classic Aire sort of stretch — varied, fishy-looking and not just one pace all the way through. You get quicker water, steady glides, deeper pools and softer edges to pick apart.
  • The Apperley Bridge setting is pretty easy to place, sitting near the Bradford–Leeds boundary. The river is crossed by Apperley Lane and the A658 Harrogate Road, so navigation is fairly straightforward.
  • Public riverside paths run through the Apperley Bridge area. That’s useful for getting a look at the water first, spotting the crease and working out where the depth changes before tackling up.
  • For a float approach, trotting through the quicker runs could be a tidy way to search. Keep the bait moving naturally and watch for those little slack-water cushions along the margins.
  • A feeder is worth considering where the river pushes on or the bottom drops into a pool. Cast tight to the crease rather than launching miles across — no need to make a simple job a faff.
  • The slower margins should come into their own when the river has a bit of colour or extra pace. Fish tucked-in water first, then work out towards the main flow if nothing is doing.
  • It’s mixed coarse water, so a flexible session makes sense. Start light and mobile, then beef things up if the flow is pulling or the river is carrying more water.
  • Autumn and winter conditions can make the Aire properly interesting, but rising water needs respect. Floods and rapidly increasing flow can turn a pleasant swim into a dangerous one, so keep checking the river.
  • Parking and the exact access points need checking with the association before setting off. The old club website is no longer reliably available, so don’t assume the first lay-by or path is fair game.

Methods: Keep it flexible: trot the glides and faster runs, then switch to a feeder in the deeper pools or along the crease. Quieter margins are well worth a look when there’s colour in the river.

Key rules

  • A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required in England.

  • Check access and parking arrangements with the association before fishing.
  • Take care during floods or rapidly rising water, when river conditions can become hazardous.
  • No current species-specific or bait restrictions were found on the available official club material.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
