We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This isn’t one long, easy-access bank. It’s made up of multiple sections, so have a look at the club map before setting off.
- Upstream, the right bank runs alongside Beckfoot Lane. The limit is the grounds of the first private residence — handy enough for getting your bearings.
- Downstream, the right bank runs from the rugby-field entry to the A650 bypass flyover. Access is from Cottingley Bridge.
- The downstream route uses steps and a public riverside footpath, but don’t expect a gentle stroll into plush pegs. The banks are steep.
- There are no cut-out pegs on the steep-bank section, and wading in the river is required. Proper river gear and a steady pair of boots are the order of the day.
- The rugby-club length is noted for good chub fishing. Look for the crease, steadier glides and any cover where chub can sit tight and mug a bait.
- Fly fishing is available across the three stretches for trout. When there’s a bit of colour and the river’s carrying nicely, it could be a bob-on place to search the faster water.
- The club has recently stocked barbel, with sport expected to improve as those fish develop. For now, keep an eye on the deeper runs and gravelly-looking water.
- Other named fish include grayling, roach, dace and large pike. That gives you plenty to target, whether you fancy trotting, feeder work or a cheeky predator session.
Methods: For chub, trotting or a light feeder around the rugby-club length sounds the ticket. Fly fishers have three stretches to explore for trout, while deeper runs are worth keeping in mind as the barbel grow on.
