We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is classic varied river fishing, not a one-shape-fits-all job. You get deep pools, smooth wooded runs, fast water, riffles and pocket water across the estate stretch.
- The fishery runs for roughly five miles, from Barden Bridge down to Kex Beck, and fishing is available from both banks. Handy when one side is showing better water.
- It’s split into six beats with named pools, so there’s plenty to explore. Day-ticket anglers can fish the full estate water rather than being boxed into one small section.
- The Wharfe is described as a spate river. Keep an eye on conditions, as a bit of colour and extra push can quickly change how the pools, glides and faster runs fish.
- Strid Wood brings dense tree cover and shaded fishing. It should offer a few cooler, quieter-looking spots, especially when the more open water is getting plenty of attention.
- Wading is allowed, with thigh or chest waders, a wading staff and a life preserver recommended by the estate. Take the flow seriously, especially after rain.
- For trout, work the varied water through the season, looking for fish in pools, runs and pocket water. Brown trout here are both wild and stocked, with typical fish reported at 10–12 inches and larger specimens over 1 kg present.
- Grayling fishing runs from 16 June to 14 March, with fish reported up to 1 kg. Cooler mornings and evenings can be quieter, which is useful on a popular visitor estate.
- It can get busy with tourists, dog walkers and visitors. The full-time river keeper can provide advice, so it’s worth asking about current water and the best beat on the day.
Methods: The water suits flexible river work across pools, wooded runs, riffles and pocket water. Adapt to the spate conditions and switch your approach as the flow changes; the estate’s river keeper can offer advice on the day.
