Avon Springs River Avon Beat, Durrington

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is the Avon Springs River Avon Beat, beside the family-run Avon Springs Fishing Lakes near Stonehenge. The fishery has direct access to the river, so the whole setup is nice and handy.
  • The beat runs for approximately 0.9 miles — a proper stretch of water, rather than a couple of token swims. Up to four rods can share the beat, which keeps things fairly relaxed for a day out.
  • Everything is fished from the right bank. The river is described as a well-maintained chalk-stream beat, with a high proportion of wild fish. Some brown trout are reared on site from original Avon native fish.
  • This is fly fishing only. Before June 1, it’s dry fly only, so you’ll be looking to make the most of the surface sport. From June 1 onwards, traditional nymphs can be used too.
  • There’s abundant insect life and the beat gets hatches of mayfly, damselfly and sedge. That gives you plenty to watch for as conditions change through the fishing season.
  • The fishing day runs from 8:30am until dusk. The river is available to visiting anglers by day rod booking, with separate pricing for the main season and the later grayling period.
  • A sporting ticket may allow you to switch between the river and the two associated trout lakes. Handy if you fancy mixing up the session, although river bookings are handled separately through Fishing Breaks.
  • There’s on-site parking and toilets at Avon Springs Fishing Lakes. Dogs aren’t allowed on the river booking, and the water isn’t advertised for night fishing.
  • The nearby access point is Durrington, postcode SP4 8HH. A straightforward option for a focused chalk-stream day, with brown trout and grayling as the principal named species.

Methods: Fly fishing only. It’s dry fly only until June 1; traditional nymphs are permitted after June 1.
