Ibsley Stream
Ibsley Stream is a cracking little offshoot of the Hampshire Avon, running for roughly half a mile. It’s a proper refuge stretch when the main river rises or the weather turns cold, with excellent coarse sport reported by Christchurch Angling Club.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open East Mills Flume on Live River Levels

The lowdown
- This is a very attractive bit of water, but don’t expect a broad, open river. It’s a compact stream with its own little character.
- Summer means shallow and weedy conditions. That can make things a bit fiddly, but there should be plenty to look for around the clearer runs and gaps in the weed.
- The big switch comes with higher main-river levels and colder weather. That’s when fish can push into the stream for shelter, making it well worth a look.
- Coarse angling is allowed through the traditional coarse-fishing season, and the club reports excellent sport. A proper little winter option, then.
- The stream was originally managed as a trout water and was formerly stocked with brown trout. Game fishing is still allowed.
- There’s a decent mix of named fish here, including bream, barbel, chub, dace, eels, grayling, perch, pike, roach, salmon and sea trout.
- For coarse fish and pike, keep the lure box sensible. Spinners, spoons and Devon minnows are banned, helping reduce the chance of hooking out-of-season salmon or sea trout.
- You’ll need the club lock for access, and members use the Clubmate app for directions to access points and parking. Toilets are available, dogs are allowed, and up to two guests can tag along.
- A maximum of two rods is allowed. Braided mainline is fine, but access times are restricted, with no extended hours and no night fishing.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: In the shallow, weedy summer water, keep things neat and accurate with float tackle or a light feeder where the flow allows. When the Avon is up and fish tuck into the stream, trotting or a small feeder into the crease could be bob on.
