Lords Walk, Amesbury

Lords Walk is a cracking half-mile stretch of the upper River Avon at Amesbury, run by Salisbury & District Angling Club. It offers fishing from both banks, with proper winter trotting for grayling and coarse fishing available where it’s permitted above Salisbury.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a classic upper Avon venue, with the river looking placid around the nearby Lords Walk path. A lovely bit of water when you fancy a quieter session.
  • The fishery runs for approximately half a mile, so there’s enough room to wander and find a swim that suits the day.
  • Both banks are available to fish. Handy stuff, especially if one side is awkward in a bit of weather or the light isn’t playing ball.
  • Grayling are the main attraction. Fish around 2 lb are described as a realistic possibility, which is a proper incentive to get the trotting gear out.
  • The stretch is also noted for dace and roach. Keep things tidy and natural, with a float working through the pace rather than charging about.
  • Winter is the big draw for trotting. Look for steady runs and work the float through the crease, keeping the presentation moving at the river’s pace.
  • It’s one of the few Avon venues above Salisbury where coarse fishing is permitted. That gives the place a useful mix of grayling interest and coarse-fishing appeal.
  • The coarse-fishing season runs from 16 June to 14 March inclusive. Check the dates before setting off, then make the most of the cooler months.
  • A fishery map is supplied with online bookings, which should make finding the designated access points and staying inside the fishery boundaries much less of a faff.
  • It’s a day-ticket water for non-members, with tickets available online or from Autocare Amesbury Ltd. Nice and straightforward for a cheeky day on the Avon.

Methods: Winter trotting is the obvious shout, especially when the grayling are on the munch. A light float approach through the glides and crease should suit the named grayling, dace and roach.

  • Obey applicable local byelaws.
  • Stay within the Salisbury & District Angling Club fishery boundaries.
  • Leave no litter.
  • Close gates after use.
  • Use designated access points.
  • Fish within the coarse-fishing season of 16 June to 14 March inclusive.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
