We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Amesbury on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • You get roughly a mile of fishing, principally double-bank, plus an extra single-bank section. Plenty of room to explore, although the exact number of pegs isn’t stated.
  • It’s relatively wide for the upper Avon, with a proper mix of chalk-stream water, deep pools and varied habitat. Don’t expect every swim to fish the same.
  • Part of the channel started life as a former mill leat. Bank restoration has helped improve the channel and fishing habitat, adding more interest to the water.
  • The resident fish are small wild brown trout, but large specimen trout are present too. Trout to double figures are reported, so there’s always a chance of something special.
  • The estate normally stocks trout, usually around 2 lb when introduced. Stocking isn’t necessarily done every year, so the balance can vary between seasons.
  • Mayfly is the big talking point. Hatches are described as prolific and can run from roughly mid-May right through to the end of July.
  • This is fly-only fishing. It’s technical chalk-stream water, so careful presentation and a tidy approach are likely to matter when fish are looking hard.
  • The season runs from 15 April to 30 September, with fishing hours from 9am to 7pm. Bookings are generally available on weekdays and Saturdays.
  • A fishing cabin gives you indoor and outdoor seating, heating, electricity, a barbecue and a stocked fridge. Hot and cold drinks are available, with toilets and changing facilities in the adjoining hut.

Methods: Fly fishing only, with the mayfly period from mid-May to the end of July offering the standout opportunity. Expect technical chalk-stream presentation over pools and varied river habitat.
