River Teme upstream of Tenbury Wells
A proper rural Teme stretch upstream of Tenbury Wells, run by the long-established Tenbury Fishing Association. It’s rugged, challenging water with cracking trout and grayling habitat, plus winter coarse fishing for a bit of variety.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Tenbury on Live River Levels
The lowdown
- The association has been looking after its fishing since 1834, and controls roughly 4.75 to 5 miles of the River Teme. That’s a fair old wander of water.
- The main stretch sits in the Teme valley, upstream of Tenbury Wells and close to the Worcestershire–Shropshire boundary. Rural, relatively unspoilt stuff.
- This is predominantly trout and grayling country. The association specifically names brown trout and highlights grayling, with the Teme known for quality habitat for both.
- Fly fishing is the principal game in town. It’s described as challenging water for the purist angler, so expect to do a bit of reading rather than simply chucking and hoping.
- The banks and conditions are rugged. In other words, proper river fishing rather than manicured parkland swims. Take care picking your way along the bank.
- Coarse fishing is allowed in winter, according to the club listing. That gives you another option when the colder months put the fly gear away.
- The Teme’s character changes with conditions, so keeping an eye on height, colour and pace is key. Look for likely glides, steadier edges and the crease where faster water meets slack.
- Members carry out annual winter bank-clearance work, and the association has also carried out trout stocking. The water is clearly actively looked after.
- There’s also around 2.4 miles of Ledwyche Brook under the association’s control, although this guide is for the Teme upstream of Tenbury Wells.
- No parking postcode or night-fishing provision is given. Day tickets are available for prospective members, so contact the association before making the trip.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Fly fishing is the main approach, with careful presentation for trout and grayling. Coarse fishing is also permitted in winter, giving feeder or float anglers a seasonal option where allowed.

Key rules
- Fly fishing is the principal method.
- Coarse fishing is permitted in winter.
- A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required under normal English fishing rules.
- Check with Tenbury Fishing Association before fishing, as day-ticket arrangements and further details are provided through its contact page.
Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
