Who it suits

Is it right for you?

Great for

  • Pike lure anglers. The quick retrieve, decent capacity and strong drag suit bigger hardbaits, soft plastics and spinner-style lures.
  • Anglers fishing near weed and snags. The 15lb drag and positive star-drag control give you a useful edge when a fish heads for trouble.

Maybe skip if

  • Complete baitcasting beginners. A low-profile reel still needs sensible brake and thumb control, especially with lighter lures.
  • Ultra-light lure anglers. This is built more for predator work than delicate finesse fishing, and its 210g weight won’t disappear on a tiny rod.

Quick verdict

A cracking bit of predator kit

The Abu Garcia Max4 Pro Low Profile Reel is a strong, quick and nicely focused baitcaster for lure anglers chasing pike and other hard-fighting predators. The 7.1:1 gearing gets line back quickly, while the 15lb drag gives you plenty of control when a lump turns for cover.

It’s not the lightest or most beginner-friendly reel around, and the left-hand layout won’t suit everyone. But if you’re after a solid baitcaster with proper pulling power, a decent bearing package and sensible line capacity, this one’s bob on.

The full rundown

Everything you'll want to know about the Abu Garcia Max4 Pro Low Profile Reel

The Abu Garcia Max4 Pro Low Profile Reel is a proper predator-focused baitcaster, mate. No dainty little finesse number here. This is a compact low-profile reel with a quick retrieve, a hefty drag and enough line capacity for serious lure work. If pike are your main target, it’s very much aimed in the right direction.

The first number that jumps out is the 7.1:1 gear ratio. That gives you 28 inches, or 71cm, of line recovery every time the handle goes round. Dead handy when a lure needs to come back quickly, when a fish follows right to the bank, or when you’ve got slack to pick up after a sudden change of direction.

That speed also helps when you’re covering water. Cast, work the lure, wind it in and bosh — you’re ready to fire again. It’s particularly useful with search baits, jerkbaits and soft plastics where the retrieve can change from slow and steady to a proper hurry-up job. You’re not stuck grinding forever between casts.

Underneath that brisk retrieve is a 15lb, or 6.8kg, maximum drag. That’s plenty of pulling power for a low-profile lure reel. It gives you useful control when a pike dives into weed, turns for a snag or suddenly wakes up at the net. Keep it sensible, though. A big number on the box doesn’t mean you should lock the drag solid and start bullying every fish.

The drag uses Abu Garcia’s Power Disk synthetic star system. The star gives you quick, simple adjustments with your thumb and fingers, which is exactly what you want when things get a bit lively. Back it off for a controlled run, tighten it when you’re steering a fish away from cover. Nice and straightforward, with no faffing about in the middle of a bite-time.

Casting control comes from Abu’s MagTrax magnetic braking system. That’s a useful feature for keeping the spool in check, particularly when the wind gets cheeky or you’re switching between lure sizes. Start with plenty of brake, thumb the spool lightly and reduce the setting as your casting becomes smoother. It’s much better than immediately winding everything off and creating a bird’s nest the size of a duvet.

The spool itself is a machined, double-anodised aluminium job, while the frame and sideplates are graphite. That keeps the reel at a manageable 210g, although it doesn’t have the ultra-solid, all-metal feel of a more premium baitcaster. For normal predator lure fishing, the balance of weight and strength is sensible. Just avoid treating it like a winch or dropping it in the margins.

Inside, you get seven stainless-steel ball bearings plus a roller bearing, with Duragear brass gearing. That’s a healthy bearing setup for this class of reel and should give the handle a smooth, positive feel when you’re working lures all day. The brass gears are also a reassuring choice for regular predator use, where heavier baits and repeated casting put more demand through the drive train.

Capacity is another strong point. It holds 135m of 0.29mm mono, 110m of 0.32mm or 80m of 0.38mm. With braid, the figures are 145m of 0.29mm, 110m of 0.36mm or 75m of 0.41mm. That gives you plenty of options for different pike rods and lure styles. There’s no spare spool and it doesn’t arrive pre-spooled, so you’ll need to choose and load your line before heading to the swim. Small job, but worth doing neatly so the casting stays spot on.

Our take

Fast, powerful and ready for proper predator work

The Max4 Pro is all about control when you’re fishing larger lures, working a bait back quickly or steering a fish away from snags. It’s a purposeful reel rather than a dainty finesse model, and that’s exactly where it makes sense.

The main thing to get right is the casting setup. Start with the MagTrax brake set fairly high, use the spool tension just tight enough to remove side-to-side play, and practise thumb control. Once you’re clipped up with the right lure weight, it should feel far less faffy and much more predictable.

What you’re buying

A fast, focused predator baitcaster

The Max4 Pro is a left-hand low-profile baitcaster built around speed and control. Its 7.1:1 gearing recovers 71cm of line per crank, so it’s well suited to covering water, picking up slack and getting a lure back in quickly after a cast.

The machined double-anodised aluminium spool runs with seven stainless-steel ball bearings and one roller bearing. Duragear brass gears handle the drive, while the Power Disk synthetic star drag provides up to 15lb of pressure. That’s a useful package for proper predator tackle rather than light general spinning.

The MagTrax magnetic brake is the bit that helps keep casting manageable. It won’t replace a good thumb, but it gives you a simple way to tame the spool in wind or with a lively lure. The graphite frame and sideplates keep the reel to 210g, although they don’t give the same locked-solid feel as a full-metal body.

Worth knowing. There’s no spare spool and the reel isn’t pre-spooled. Pick your braid or mono before the first session, load it evenly and leave a sensible amount of room at the spool lip. Overfilling is a quick route to a cracking backlash.

Match it to your fishing

Best with predator lure setups

This reel makes most sense on a suitable baitcasting rod for pike and other larger predators. The quick retrieve is handy with jerkbaits, crankbaits, soft plastics and search lures, especially when you’re moving around a big water and trying to find an active fish.

It’s also a good fit for swims with weed, reeds or snags. The drag gives you room to apply pressure, but use it alongside sensible tackle and proper fish care. A strong reel doesn’t make a risky trace or unsuitable rod safe, so build the whole outfit properly.

For a newer baitcaster user, spend a few minutes setting it up beside the water before you start firing casts at the far bank. Match the brake to the lure, keep the spool tension sensible and use your thumb during the cast. That’ll save a load of faff and probably save your temper too.

Worth knowing. The left-hand handle position is not a minor detail. It’s ideal if you like holding the rod in your right hand while retrieving left-handed, but it won’t suit anglers who naturally wind with their right. Check that before buying, mate.

Quick answers

The stuff you’ll want to know

Can it handle braid? Yes. The stated braid capacities run from 145m of 0.29mm down to 75m of 0.41mm. Use a line diameter that matches your rod, lure range and the sort of cover you’re fishing. Don’t simply chase the heaviest line the spool can accept.

Is the fast gearing always better? Not automatically. It’s brilliant for picking up line and working certain lures, but some baits are easier to control with a slower retrieve. The good news is that 7.1:1 gives you the option to wind slowly while still having plenty of speed available when a fish follows or you need to clear a cast.

What about maintenance? Keep grit and water out of the reel, wipe it down after a session and follow Abu Garcia’s care guidance for lubrication. Pay particular attention after fishing around weed, mud or spray. A few minutes of sensible care can keep the gears and bearings feeling bob on for much longer.

On paper

Pros & cons

What we like

  • Quick 7.1:1 retrieve is handy for working lures and picking up slack.
  • 15lb of drag gives plenty of authority around weed, snags and cover.
  • Good line capacity for braid or heavier mono predator setups.
  • Seven stainless-steel ball bearings plus a roller bearing keep the mechanism nicely equipped.

Worth knowing

  • Graphite frame and sideplates mean it’s not the most rigid-feeling reel in the Abu range.
  • At 210g, it’s reasonably compact but not a featherweight for all-day finesse work.
  • Left-hand retrieve limits it to anglers who specifically want that handle position.
