Who it suits

Is it right for you?

Great for

  • Predator anglers exploring unfamiliar lakes, canals and reservoirs. You can quickly check depth changes, likely ambush areas and underwater features before spending hours working a swim.
  • Mobile anglers who want to map water from the bank. The compact body and Wi-Fi connection make it much easier to carry and use than a traditional boat-based sonar setup.

Maybe skip if

  • Anglers who only fish one well-known swim. If you already know every bar, shelf and snag, the extra information may not justify a high-value purchase.
  • Anyone wanting a completely hands-off fishing aid. You still have to cast it, retrieve it sensibly, interpret the display and make the right angling decisions.

Quick verdict

Verdict

The Deeper Smart Sonar CHIRP+ 2 is a cracking bit of kit for predator anglers who want to read unfamiliar water, check depths and find likely features from the bank. Its three CHIRP frequencies, tight narrow beam and GPS mapping give you far more than a basic depth finder.

It’s not a magic fish-catching button, mind. You still need to pick the right lure, present it properly and put in the watercraft. But for mapping a new venue, locating drop-offs or checking the margins before committing to a swim, it’s a seriously handy edge.

Three-frequency CHIRP, up to 15 scans per second and useful target separation give it strong searching and feature-finding ability.

Impact on Fish Catching
8.8/10

It can put you over better depth changes and features, although presentation, timing and watercraft still decide whether the rods are off.

Ease of Use
8.6/10

The cast-and-retrieve idea is straightforward, but interpreting sonar images and managing the connected phone takes a little practice.

Value for Money
8.4/10

The full rundown

Everything you'll want to know about the Deeper Smart Sonar CHIRP+ 2

There’s a lot of water out there that looks completely featureless from the bank. Same old chuck, same old retrieve, and you’re basically guessing what’s happening under the surface. The Deeper Smart Sonar CHIRP+ 2 is built to change that. It’s a small castable sonar that links to your phone or tablet, letting you get a better picture of depth, contours and likely predator-holding spots without dragging a boat into the equation.

At just 65 mm across and 92 g, it’s properly compact. Chuck it in a lure bag, keep it in the supplied neoprene pouch and you’ve still got plenty of room for traces, pliers and a couple of boxes of lures. That light weight matters when you’re moving swims all day. You don’t want another bulky lump hanging off your shoulder while you’re covering water and looking for a screaming take.

The clever bit is the three-frequency CHIRP sonar. You get 675 kHz, 240 kHz and 100 kHz frequencies, with 7°, 20° and 47° beam angles. In plain English, you can choose between a tighter, more detailed look or a wider sweep of the water. The narrow beam is the one for picking apart a small target area, while the wider beam helps when you’re searching a broad flat or a new stretch of canal.

That 7° beam offers target separation down to 1 cm, with the medium and wide beams separating targets to 2.4 cm. Those figures make it much more useful than a basic depth blob on a screen. You’re looking for practical clues: a sudden shelf, a clean hard patch, weed coming up from the bottom or a drop into a deeper channel. For predator fishing, those little changes can be bang on the money.

The depth range is equally generous, running from 15 cm down to 100 m. Most UK anglers won’t come close to the deepest end of that, obviously, but the shallow capability is dead handy around margins, canal edges and shallow reservoir arms. Cast it past a likely area, retrieve it steadily and you can start building a picture of the swim before you start firing lures around like a man possessed.

The CHIRP+ 2 connects over Wi-Fi, with a stable connection quoted up to 120 m. That gives you decent freedom to cast beyond the near margin and still keep an eye on the display. You’ll want your phone mounted securely and easy to glance at, though. There’s no point making a perfect cast if you’re then faffing about trying to find the screen while the sonar is coming back in.

GPS brings another useful layer. With it switched on, you can build maps as you scan, which is proper handy when you’re exploring a big reservoir or a venue you’ve never fished before. You can mark productive features and return to them later rather than relying on, ‘It was somewhere over there, mate.’ Switch GPS off and battery life rises to up to 15 hours, while GPS use gives up to 9 hours.

The body uses ABS with titanium inserts, and the box includes two attachment bolts, a USB wire, a night-fishing cover and a neoprene pouch. That’s a sensible bundle for a bit of kit likely to spend plenty of time being cast, retrieved and carried between swims. The night cover is especially useful for keeping the display manageable in low light, when bright screens can be a proper pain.

There is a learning curve, mind. A sonar won’t tell you which lure to tie on or guarantee a lump is sitting under the next cast. You still need to read the water, understand seasonal movement and make the right presentation. But once you get your head around beam width, depth changes and steady retrieves, the CHIRP+ 2 can make your searching much more deliberate. Less random flogging. More fishing with a plan.

Our take

The big angle

This is about turning a blank-looking stretch into a picture of what’s actually underneath. Cast it, retrieve it steadily and the companion app can help you build a clearer view of depth changes, weed and underwater features.

That’s especially useful for predator fishing, where a small depth change, hard patch or baitfish gathering can make all the difference. It also has crossover appeal for carp and coarse anglers wanting to map a margin or locate a bar without taking a boat out.

What you’re buying

A small sonar with a surprisingly useful spread

The CHIRP+ 2 is a compact castable sonar rather than a traditional fixed fish finder. You cast it out, retrieve it and view the information on a connected phone or tablet. Three frequencies and three beam angles let you swap between detail and coverage depending on the job in hand.

The tight 7° beam is the choice when you’re checking a precise feature, while the 20° and 47° beams help scan more water. With a 15 cm to 100 m depth range and scan rates up to 15 scans per second, it’s suited to quick checks as well as proper mapping sessions.

Worth knowing. Keep your retrieve smooth and controlled. A frantic wind-in can make the picture harder to interpret, especially when you’re learning what weed, bottom changes and genuine targets look like on the display.

On the bank

Made for mobile search fishing

This is at its best with a predator angler who moves around. Check a few likely areas, compare depths and find features before committing to a swim. It can also help carp and coarse anglers inspect margins, shelves and bars when a boat isn’t an option.

The built-in GPS is particularly useful on big, unfamiliar venues. Map a few areas during a day out, mark the interesting bits and you’ll have a more useful plan next time. For a short session, GPS-off battery life gives you plenty of scope for repeated depth checks.

Worth knowing. Use the narrow beam when you’ve already found a likely feature and want detail. Start with the wider beam when you’re searching, otherwise you can end up inspecting one tiny patch while better water sits just outside it.

Quick answers

The bits anglers usually ask about

The CHIRP+ 2 connects over Wi-Fi rather than needing a physical cable to your phone. The quoted stable connection is up to 120 m, so you can cast a useful distance and still keep the display linked. Keep the phone secure, dry and visible throughout the retrieve.

Battery life depends on how you use it. GPS gives up to 9 hours, while switching GPS off increases that to up to 15 hours. For a full day, charge it beforehand and keep your phone topped up too, as the display device is part of the overall setup.

It can show you depth and underwater information, but it can’t replace watercraft. Fish may move, bait can shift and a feature that looks perfect can still be quiet. Treat it as a way to fish smarter, not as an automatic bite button.

Your questions answered

What anglers want to know

The stuff you’d ask your mate on the next peg. Straight answers, no waffle.

01

Can the Deeper Smart Sonar CHIRP+ 2 be used for predator fishing?

Yes. It’s particularly useful for finding depth changes, baitfish areas, weed edges and other features that can hold pike, perch and zander. Use the narrow beam when you’re trying to inspect a specific patch, then switch to wider coverage when searching a larger area.

02

How deep can the CHIRP+ 2 scan?

Its stated depth range is 15 cm to 100 m. Real-world readings can still vary with water conditions, bottom type, movement and how consistently you retrieve the sonar.

03

How long does the battery last?

Up to 9 hours with GPS enabled, or up to 15 hours with GPS switched off. A long mapping session will use more power than a few quick depth checks, so charge it before a proper day on the bank.

What anglers say

The word from the bank

Our read: verdict. The strongest reasons to choose it are sharp chirp detail across three beam options and useful 7° narrow beam for pinpointing features; the main trade-off is you’ll need a compatible phone or tablet to view the sonar information.
