Who it suits
Is it right for you?
Great for
- Carp anglers fishing bottom baits on anti-eject rigs. The compact, aggressive shape is designed to turn quickly and hold securely when a carp moves off.
- Anglers who like to tailor hook size to bait and venue. The range runs from size 2 through to 12, with barbed and barbless choices across much of the line.
Maybe skip if
- Float and light coarse anglers. This is a specialist carp hook pattern rather than a delicate hook for small baits and fine tackle.
- Anglers after one totally universal hook. The aggressive geometry works brilliantly in the right setup but isn’t the obvious pick for every rig, bait or lakebed.

Quick verdict
A cracking hook for positive hooking
The Gardner Mugga is built for anglers who want a compact, aggressive hook pattern that turns a carp’s movement into a solid hook hold. The short curved shank, sharply in-turned eye and sweeping non-reversed bend all point towards proper hooking performance.
It’s not the most subtle-looking hook in the box, and it needs matching carefully to your rig and bait size. Get that bit right, though, and this is a dependable pattern for modern carp work, from clipped-up spots to close-range margin fishing.

Forged, double-tempered high-carbon steel and a tidy matt finish give it a properly robust carp-hook build.
The short shank, in-turned eye and sweeping bend are designed for fast, positive hook rotation.
Used with a suitable bottom-bait rig, the aggressive shape can improve how reliably the hook finds a hold.
It’s straightforward to rig, but the specialised shape means hair length, hooklink and bait size need a little thought.
The standard ten-hook packs and optional bulk packs offer sensible flexibility for a specialist carp pattern.

The full rundown
Everything you'll want to know about the Gardner Tackle Mugga Hooks
There are hooks that quietly sit in the box, and there are hooks that look like they mean business. Gardner Tackle’s Mugga sits firmly in the second camp. It’s a compact, aggressive carp hook made for positive pick-ups, solid hook holds and those moments when the bobbin shoots up and you need the hook to do its job without a load of faff.
The Mugga has a short curved shank, a sweeping non-reversed bend and an eye that’s turned aggressively in by 25 degrees. That’s a pretty purposeful bit of geometry. The whole pattern is designed to encourage the hook to rotate quickly as a carp moves off with the bait, rather than hanging around politely in the mouth and giving the fish a chance to bosh it back out.
That makes it a natural choice for bottom-bait rigs. A standard knotless knot is the obvious starting point, but the shape also works nicely with coated braid, stripped-back sections and anti-eject-style presentations. The hook isn’t trying to be invisible in the conventional sense. It’s trying to be efficient, and there’s a difference.
The current Covert Dark version has a longer, slimmer and sharper point than the previous Mugga design. That should appeal if you’re fishing hard spots, clean gravel or pressured venues where a really keen point can help. It’s still worth checking the point after casting onto rough ground, mind. Even a cracking hook can get a bit naff after clattering stones all day.
Build quality looks suitably serious for carp work. Gardner makes these hooks from forged, double-tempered high-carbon steel wire, giving them a strong feel without making the pattern look like an oversized anchor. That matters when you’re fishing close to weed, near snags or with a lump attached to the other end.
The Covert Dark finish is a single-layer matt electroplated camouflage coating. It keeps the hook fairly low-key against darker lakebeds and gives the pattern a neat, non-shiny appearance. It won’t magically make a bad rig disappear, of course, but it’s a sensible finish for modern carp fishing where every little bit of presentation can help.
There’s also a decent spread of sizes. You can pick from 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12, which covers everything from smaller carp baits and lighter presentations through to bigger hookbaits and more demanding situations. Sizes 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 are offered barbed or barbless, while the current Covert Dark size 2 is barbed only.
For many anglers, sizes 6 and 8 will be the sweet spot. They pair neatly with everyday carp baits and give you a good balance of hooking mechanics, strength and presentation. Go smaller when the bait and venue call for it, or bigger when you’re fishing a larger hookbait, heavier gear or a snaggy swim. Don’t just pick a size because it looks beastly in the packet, mate.
The main thing to remember is that the Mugga has a definite personality. It’s aggressive, compact and built to turn. That’s brilliant when your rig is designed around those traits, but it isn’t a universal answer for every bait, every lakebed or every style of fishing. Get the hair length right, keep the hooklink behaving properly and check that point before you cast. Do that, and it’s a proper useful pattern to have clipped up in the box.

Our take
The hook for aggressive presentations
The Mugga’s big selling point is its shape. This isn’t a dainty little match hook for presenting a single maggot under a float. It’s a purpose-built carp hook with a short curved shank, an eye turned aggressively inwards by 25 degrees and a sweeping, non-reversed bend.
That geometry gives the hook a strong tendency to rotate and grab as the fish moves away. It’s especially at home on rigs where the hook needs to turn quickly, such as a coated braid presentation with a stripped section, a stiffened hair arrangement or a simple knotless-knot setup.
The current Covert Dark model also brings a longer, slimmer and sharper point than the previous version. That’s a useful update. A fine point can make a real difference when you’re fishing over a hard spot or dealing with cautious carp that aren’t giving you much to work with.
The shape and build
A compact hook with a serious attitude
The Mugga’s short curved shank and 25-degree in-turned eye create an aggressive hooking profile. Add the non-reversed sweeping bend and the hook is clearly intended to rotate fast and find a firm hold, rather than simply sit beneath the bait.
The current Covert Dark point is longer, slimmer and sharper than the previous version. The hook is made from forged, double-tempered high-carbon steel wire, while the matt electroplated finish gives it a muted look on the lakebed.
Worth knowing. The current range and older Mugga listings don’t line up perfectly on availability. Check whether you’re buying the current Covert Dark pattern or an original Mugga, especially if you need a particular barb option.
On the bank
Best used with a positive bottom-bait rig
This is a strong choice for anglers fishing bottom baits on knotless-knot, coated-braid or anti-eject-style rigs. The hook’s geometry does much of the work, but the rest of the rig still needs to let it turn naturally.
Sizes 6 and 8 are sensible all-round starting points for many carp situations. Move up or down according to the hookbait, target fish, weed and snags. For barbless waters, choose carefully because the size 2 Covert Dark option is barbed only.
Worth knowing. Keep the hook point clear and sharp. After a cast onto gravel or a few minutes around snags, inspect it before settling back in for bite-time.
Quick answers
The bits anglers usually want to know
Standard packs contain 10 hooks. Bulk packs of 20 are available in size 4 and size 6 barbed versions, handy if those are your go-to sizes and you don’t fancy constantly nicking into a fresh packet.
The range covers sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. Sizes 4 through 12 are available barbed or barbless in the current range, while the current Covert Dark size 2 is barbed only.
Worth knowing. Treat the Mugga as a specialist carp pattern, not a do-everything hook. It’s at its best when the rig, bait size and hook size all work with its aggressive turning action.
