Is it right for you?

Great for

  • Pike anglers using larger lures or deadbaits. The Cardiff offers useful capacity, a controlled retrieve and a sturdy frame for proper predator tackle.
  • Anglers fishing big reservoirs, canals and rivers. The round body and generous spool capacity give you plenty of line for long casts and open-water swims.

Maybe skip if

  • Finesse lure anglers. It’s a fairly substantial round reel and isn’t aimed at tiny lures or ultra-light presentations.
  • Anyone wanting a compact, featherweight baitcaster. Modern low-profile reels generally sit closer to the rod and feel less bulky in the hand.

Quick verdict

The verdict

The Shimano Cardiff 301A is a cracking, no-nonsense round baitcaster for anglers who want proper line capacity, a solid aluminium body and a steady retrieve. Its 5.8:1 gearing is a good all-rounder for lure work and bait fishing, while the level wind keeps line laying tidy without loads of faff.

It’s not the lightest or most compact option, and the 4.5kg maximum drag won’t suit every heavy-duty predator job. But for pike, zander, catfish-style bait work and big-water lure fishing, it’s a dependable bit of kit with a proper old-school feel.

The full rundown

Everything you'll want to know about the Shimano Cardiff 301A Baitcasting Reel

Round baitcasters have a proper place in predator fishing. They’re not as tiny and slick-looking as modern low-profile reels, but they bring useful capacity, a solid feel and a bit of old-school muscle to the bank. The Shimano Cardiff 301A is very much in that camp, mate.

This is the left-hand CDF301A model, so it suits anglers who prefer to wind with the left hand after casting. It’s a round-profile baitcasting reel built around a die-cast aluminium HAGANE Body, with a machined aluminium super-duraluminium spool and a sensible 5.8:1 gear ratio.

That gearing gives roughly 61–62cm of line per turn of the handle. In real fishing terms, it’s a handy middle ground. You can work a lure without constantly spinning like a madman, but there’s enough pickup for changing pace, clearing slack and keeping contact with a moving bait.

For pike anglers, that makes the Cardiff a useful all-rounder. It’ll sit comfortably on a rod for larger soft plastics, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and plugs, while the round shape and line capacity also make sense for deadbaiting or fishing big, open swims. It’s not tied to one tactic.

The spool holds a good whack of mono too. Shimano lists 12lb at 230 yards, 14lb at 180 yards and 17lb at 150 yards, with the metric capacities covering 0.25mm, 0.30mm and 0.40mm line sizes. That’s plenty of breathing room for a big reservoir, a long chuck or a lively fish heading for the far side of the snaggy bit.

Casting control comes from Shimano’s VBS centrifugal braking system. Like any baitcaster, it rewards a bit of setup rather than a slapdash spool tension tweak and a prayer. Match the brake setting to the lure, get your thumb involved and you’ll have a much easier time keeping the spool under control when a cheeky side wind kicks in.

The level wind is another dead-handy feature. It guides the line back across the spool as you retrieve, so you’re not manually spreading line after every cast. That’s especially useful when you’re busy changing lures, watching a float or trying to keep a bait moving through the margins.

The reel weighs 252g, or 8.9oz. That’s not outrageous for a round baitcaster, but it’s certainly more substantial than many low-profile designs. On a balanced predator rod it should feel purposeful; on a light lure setup, that extra bulk may become a bit wearing during a full day of casting.

Drag capacity is 4.5kg, or 10lb, through a star-drag system. That’s enough for normal pike and zander work when the rod, line and trace are doing their jobs properly. It isn’t a locked-up brute for hauling fish straight through thick timber, though, so choose the swim and tackle combination with a bit of nous.

The rest of the package is refreshingly straightforward: four A-RB ball bearings plus one roller bearing, a double aluminium handle and paddle-style knobs. No daft faff. Just a traditional round reel that should appeal if you like tackle with a little presence and plenty of line in reserve.

Our take

Why this reel makes sense for predator anglers

Round baitcasters still have a place on the predator bank. The Cardiff 301A gives you plenty of capacity, a robust frame and a controlled, mid-speed retrieve without turning the whole setup into a weighty lump.

That makes it especially appealing when you’re chucking larger lures, fishing deadbaits or need enough line to cover a big reservoir swim. It’s straightforward tackle that gets on with the job.

The reel itself

A sturdy round platform with useful capacity

The Cardiff 301A is built around a die-cast aluminium frame with Shimano’s HAGANE Body approach. That gives it a more solid, workmanlike character than many ultra-compact baitcasters. The machined aluminium super-duraluminium spool keeps things purposeful rather than flimsy, and the level wind makes everyday line management properly simple.

Its VBS centrifugal braking system is designed to help control spool speed during the cast. Set it sensibly for the lure weight, keep your thumb lightly involved and you’ve got a system that suits general predator work. The 5.8:1 ratio is similarly sensible, with enough speed for lure fishing but no silly rush on the retrieve.

Worth knowing. The 301A is the left-hand retrieve model. Check the handle side before ordering, especially if you’re used to swapping hands after the cast.

On the predator bank

Made for capable, practical predator setups

This reel makes most sense on a medium-to-heavy baitcasting rod for pike, zander and other predator applications where you’re using proper lures, heavier line and potentially long casts. The capacity is a real advantage on big reservoirs, wide rivers and snaggy venues where you don’t want to be fishing with the spool nearly empty.

It also works for anglers who prefer a traditional round reel in the hand. The paddle knobs are easy to grip, and the aluminium handle feels more purposeful than a tiny finesse setup. For deadbaits, drifting presentations and steady lure work, that calm, controlled character is bob on.

It’s less convincing for tiny lures, delicate presentations or all-day casting with an ultra-light outfit. The 252g body and round shape have more presence, and the 4.5kg drag means you shouldn’t treat it like a winch when the fish bolts into cover.

Quick answers

The bits anglers usually want to know

Can it handle braid? Yes, the reel can be used within a suitable predator setup, but pay attention to backing, spool fill and line choice. Braid diameter, lure weight and brake settings all affect casting behaviour, so don’t assume a full spool will behave the same with every line.

Is the retrieve too slow? Not really. The 5.8:1 ratio and 61–62cm pickup sit in a versatile middle ground. You can speed up a lure when the fish are on the munch, but you’ve still got control for slower presentations and bait work.

Worth knowing. The Cardiff 301A is best viewed as a dependable all-round predator reel, not a specialist finesse or extreme-power tool. Match it to the rod, line and swim, and it’ll make far more sense than chasing headline numbers.
