Blunham — The Spinney
Blunham Spinney is a cracking members-only stretch on the Great Ouse, run by Barnet and District Angling Club. Willow shade, plenty of cover and four to five feet of water make it a proper all-year venue, with both good bags and the odd chunky fish on the cards.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a fishery made up of a number of swims tucked under willow trees, so there’s plenty of shade and a bit of natural cover between pegs.
- The water generally sits at around four to five feet deep, although some swims have deeper holes. Worth plumbing around rather than assuming it’s all the same.
- It’s reported to fish well throughout the year. That gives you options — float work when things are moving, or a feeder approach when you want to pin a bait down.
- The venue can produce good bags, but there are also good-sized individual fish about. So don’t ignore the better-looking edges while chasing numbers.
- Summer boat traffic can disturb the water. If the river gets chopped up, keep things simple and look for quieter spells or tucked-away water around the cover.
- Roach, bream, chub, tench, perch, gudgeon, bleak and pike are named for the Luton Angling Club listing. Carp, barbel and larger specimen fish are also associated with its Blunham Spinney listing.
- The willows and cover should give you plenty to investigate swim by swim. Look for changes in depth, the deeper holes and any crease where steadier water meets the push.
- There’s a 12-peg Barnet club match listed for Blunham Spinney in the 2026/2027 fixture list, so match activity is part of the venue’s picture.
- The close season runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. Outside that, it’s described as a venue that can produce throughout the year.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Float fishing and trotting suit the mixed river life, while a feeder is a handy way to search the four-to-five-foot water and deeper holes. Keep an eye on the boat traffic in summer and work the quieter water around the willow cover.
