The full rundown on Wyboston Lakes
South Lagoon is a former gravel pit of approximately 20 acres on the Wyboston Lakes complex near St Neots. It’s got 28 numbered fishing pegs, so there’s a decent spread of swims to choose from. The lake is controlled by Luton Angling Club and stays open all year, giving you plenty of scope for a quick day session or a longer stint on the bank.
This is a proper mixed fishery. South Lagoon holds bream to double figures, with reported tench over 10 lb, perch to 4 lb, pike to 32 lb, zander over 16 lb and carp to at least 33 lb. Bream shoals have produced reported bags exceeding 100 lb too, so there’s plenty to keep an angler interested, whether you fancy building a weight or sitting it out for a lump.
Night fishing is permitted on South Lagoon, and a night ticket covers fishing during any part of the day and into or during darkness. The maximum stay is 48 hours, or two nights, and night anglers need to vacate their swim by noon on departure day. Fishing beyond noon means paying for an additional day ticket, so it’s worth having the timing sorted before you settle in.
The River Great Ouse stretch adds another string to the bow. There are 15 fishing pegs, running from the South Lagoon inlet towards the old boathouse and Heron Lake boundary. The section contains carp, chub, bream, tench, pike, perch, roach and zander, with double-figure carp reported upstream and chub catches of 5–6 lb regularly reported. A more mobile river session could be bob on if you fancy exploring rather than clipping up for a long stay in one swim.
Tickets are paid in cash to an authorised bailiff on the bank, and advance booking is not normally required. The current listed adult prices are £10 for a day ticket and £20 for a night ticket. Junior, OAP and disabled tickets are £5 for the day and £10 at night. Day tickets are for daylight fishing only. Before travelling, check the match and events calendar, take cash, and give yourself time to choose a swim and wait for the bailiff.
It’s a catch-and-release venue, so every fish must go straight back. A valid Environment Agency rod licence is also required, while three rods need a club third-rod upgrade or an additional day-ticket charge. Under-16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. There are no toilet facilities at South Lagoon, dogs aren’t allowed, and camper vans and caravans aren’t permitted on site. Pack the essentials, keep the kit tidy, and you’ll be ready for a cracking session.

How we'd fish South Lagoon
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On a big lake with gravel bars, a good bed of bait on or behind a bar gives roaming fish a reason to stop and feed for longer.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.

How we'd fish River Great Ouse stretch
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
chub
Bread or worm tight to cover for chub
Chub sit under overhanging trees and snags and are cautious, so a quiet approach and a natural bait near cover catches them.
- Bread flake or lobworm on a size 8 hook with a link leger.
- Keep low and quiet on the bank.
- In summer, try a free-lined slug or floating crust.
bream
Groundbait feeder at range for bream
Bream shoal up and graze over open, silty areas. A steady stream of groundbait in one spot keeps a shoal in front of you.
- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
