The full rundown on Kennet and Avon Canal – Newbury Stretch

The Kennet and Avon Canal around Newbury is a proper bit of canal fishing rather than a neat little lake venue. The relevant NAA-controlled water includes the Enborne section, just west of Newbury town, running for roughly 2 km between Benham Bridge and Egypt Point.

The downstream part runs from Guyers Lock to Egypt Point. That gives you a decent mix of canal features to explore, with margins, lock areas and quieter stretches all worth a look. Lure anglers can work the edges and lock features for perch and pike, while silver-fish anglers have roach, dace and bream to target.

The Enborne stretch is noted particularly for perch, pike and silver fish. Bream are reported where runoff from adjoining land enters the canal. Brown trout are also among the reported species, so there is a bit more variety here than the usual canal suspects.

For a traditional approach, pole and waggler fishing with light tackle are the go-to methods. Keep things tidy and mobile, especially if you are looking for perch or dace. The water can be very clear in winter, so finer tackle and a careful presentation should be on the cards rather than charging in with a bucket of gear.

There are fishing platforms at either end of the section east of Guyers Lock, which is useful if you want a more defined peg. Elsewhere, access by car is limited and parking is only available at limited nearby locations, so expect a walk to the water. Pack light, wear decent footwear and avoid turning the approach into a full-on faff.

This is a shared canal environment. Walkers, joggers and cyclists use the towpath, and anglers need to make sure they are not blocking people passing through. It is a busy bit of water at times, but that is part of the Newbury canal scene.

There are no general day tickets for NAA waters. Fishing is available to an eligible NAA member's guest, with guest tickets priced at £10 for 12 hours or £15 for 24 hours. Check the current rules, close season and any match or maintenance notices before setting off, then you can get settled in and enjoy a proper canal session.
