We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Newbury on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is a fairly uniform bit of river, with similar depths and widths running through the stretch. No dramatic changes to hunt out, but it’s nice and easy to get settled.
  • Fishing is from the towpath bank only. The towpath is wide and hard underfoot, so access is a doddle compared with muddier river venues.
  • It’s described as suitable for a wide range of angling approaches. That makes it a handy all-rounder rather than a one-trick swim.
  • The water holds a proper mixed bag. Chub are listed to 7lb or more, with roach to 2lb and perch to 3lb or more.
  • There are a few rogue carp knocking about too. Elusive barbel are present, so there’s always a chance of a cheeky surprise when targeting the bigger fish.
  • The club record pike came from here at 28lb 14oz. That’s a serious predator for a canalised Kennet stretch, so don’t overlook the pike angling.
  • With fairly consistent depths and widths, it should suit both moving-bait and static approaches. Trotting, feeder work and other permitted methods are all within the venue’s wide-ranging remit.
  • There’s a large public car park shared by the venue, which keeps the faff down on arrival. The stretch is described as easily accessible.
  • The normal river close season applies from 15 March to 15 June. The association’s fishing season runs from 16 June to 15 June the following year, so check your permit is valid before setting up.

Methods: The association describes Whitehouse as suitable for a wide range of angling approaches. With uniform depths and widths, it’s a flexible stretch for mixed coarse fishing, with chub, roach, perch, carp, barbel and pike all on the list.
