We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Reading Calcot Bridge on Live River Levels
The lowdown
- This is the Kennet itself, not the adjacent canal. The water sits near Theale Gauging Station and the Sheffield Bottom area.
- The upstream end is the one to fancy for larger barbel and chub. The lower section, down near the canal mouth, is also noted for bigger fish.
- Large barbel have been reported to over 16lb, while chub to 7lb are present. That’s a cracking bit of river when the fish are having it.
- Specimen perch are found throughout the stretch. There are also occasional tench, some bream and sometimes good bags of roach.
- Dace are present too, and RDAA specifically links the venue with stick-float fishing. A tidy float approach is well worth having in the bag.
- Think proper Kennet water rather than a uniform drain. Nearby sections are described as secluded and meandering, with parts of the river bypassed by the canal cut.
- For barbel and chub, feeder tactics are the obvious starting point when there’s a bit of colour or extra pace. Pick out creases, deeper runs and the steadier water.
- When conditions settle, trotting a stick float through the glides should be bob on for dace, roach and anything else on the munch. Keep the tackle sensible and mobile.
- RDAA runs organised coaching and matches here, so it’s an actively used fishery. Check the swim properly before setting up, especially around the restricted areas and overhead lines.
Methods: Feeder fishing is a natural shout for the barbel and chub, especially with a bit of colour in the river. When it clears and steadies, try trotting a stick float through the glides for dace, roach and perch.
