The full rundown on Theale Pits

Theale Pits sits just south of Theale in Berkshire, with the nearest postcode RG7 4AT. It is roughly half a mile from Theale Station and about two miles from M4 Junction 12, so getting there is pretty bob on. The main gate and car-park entrance are marked by the what3words location Dock Down Hoping, with the gate code supplied in the electronic ticket paperwork.

The fishery covers more than 80 acres of secluded countryside beside the River Kennet. There are three mature gravel-pit waters here: Island Lake, Theale 1 and Theale 2. For the day-ticket angler, Island Lake is the one to look at. The other two are syndicate-membership waters only.

Island Lake is an approximately 2.8-acre, otter-fenced carp fishery with one large island and fifteen purpose-built low-level swims. The fishery estimates around 150 carp, with a reported lake record of 35lb 8oz. At least four different carp have topped 30lb, while more than 65 different twenties have been reported since records restarted in 2022. Proper handy figures for anyone chasing a new lump.

There is a nice mix of likely spots to pick apart, including reed-fringed margins, overhanging bushes, island margins and open water. That gives you plenty to think about, whether the carp are tucked in the edge or having it around the island. The lake is described as a year-round venue, and solar- and wind-powered aeration is used on Island Lake.

Numbers are kept fairly tight, with a maximum of eight 23-hour session anglers and two daylight anglers normally allowed at once. A session runs from 09:00 until 08:00 the next morning, while a daylight ticket runs from 09:00 until sunset. You can arrive from 08:30 to disinfect kit, but fishing starts at 09:00. Night fishing is available on the 23-hour ticket.

All tickets must be bought online in advance, as nothing is sold on the bank. Standard tickets cover one person fishing Island Lake with up to two rods. March-November 2026 prices are £26 for a 23-hour session and £16 for daylight; December-February 2026 prices are £18 and £12 respectively. Exclusive bookings are also available, with space for up to fifteen anglers.

The rules are fairly thorough, so have a proper read before setting off. Fish-welfare kit must be clean and completely dry, then disinfected in Virkon Aquatic for five minutes. No dogs, nuts, artificial baits, pole fishing, fly fishing, boats, swimming or wading. Fish only from recognised swims, keep cars in the car park, and bring a current Environment Agency rod licence.
