The full rundown on Grand Union Canal – Milton Keynes Stretch

The Grand Union Canal through Milton Keynes is a proper old-school canal venue, stretching for roughly 9 miles through the town and surrounding areas. MKAA also describes its home water as approximately 9.5 miles, so either way, there’s a fair bit of bank to explore.

The controlled length runs through bridge sections 68–76 and 81–102, covering water north and south of Milton Keynes. The northern end takes in Wolverton, New Bradwell, Oakridge Park and Stanton Low. Down south, the canal heads towards Water Eaton and Fenny Lock around bridges 95A–102.

It’s mixed coarse fishing rather than a tidy little lake. The reported list is cracking: carp, eels, catfish, roach, rudd, perch, pike, tench, bream, zander and chub. The canal averages about 1.25 metres deep, with good stocks of silver fish and abundant bream and skimmers.

There are some properly eye-catching reported fish too. MKAA reports carp to 37 lb, eels to 9 lb and catfish to 30 lb. Roach, rudd and perch are widely present, while chub are more localised. Pike fishing is particularly noted around wider areas such as Willow Bridge and the marina area.

That gives the stretch plenty of angles. Pleasure anglers can settle in for silver fish and bream, match anglers have a venue used for MKAA spring-league events, and lure or drop-shot anglers have perch, pike and zander to target. Wider sections are worth considering for predators, while the general canal length offers plenty of water to read.

Access and parking vary by bridge section. A representative northern access point is near Bridge 76 and Old Wolverton Road, MK12 5NL. Bridge 97 access is via Watling Street and Manor Fields. Watch the details there: parking is specifically discouraged on Sycamore Avenue and Pinewood Drive because the bridge is closed.

Fishing is allowed all year, and night fishing is permitted. You must fish from the towpath side, keep the path usable for walkers, joggers and cyclists, and take care around moored boats. The £5 canal day ticket is sold on the bank by bailiffs and is cash only. Anglers aged 13 and over also need an Environment Agency rod licence.
