The full rundown on Willen Lake
Willen Lake sits in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, and is managed for fishing by Milton Keynes Angling Association. The two waters cover roughly 150 acres altogether, so there’s plenty of water to get your head around and no shortage of features to look for.
Willen North covers approximately 60 acres, while Willen South is the bigger water at around 90 acres. Both lakes hold specimen carp, with carp commonly recorded in the 20lb to 40lb bracket. South Lake has also produced mirror carp to 48lb, including the MKAA record carp at 58lb.
It isn’t just a carp chuck, either. Large bream, including double-figure fish, are present alongside tench, pike reported to about 30lb, perch and other silverfish. There’s enough variety here for a proper change of plan when the carp aren’t on the munch.
Fishing is members-only, with no MKAA day tickets available. The 2026/27 membership season runs from 16 June 2026 to 15 June 2027, and tickets are obtained through MKAA rather than by booking individual sessions. A three-rod ticket covers both Willen North and Willen South, although three rods also means you’ll need a three-rod Environment Agency licence.
The main Willen Lake waters allow night fishing, which opens up the usual margins, quiet hours and long-stay tactics. That said, some South Lake syndicate-bank areas have their own daylight or 24-hour restrictions. The Beaches syndicate is a separate restricted, waiting-list-based option, with four swims fishable by any method 24/7 and other bank areas limited to float or freeline fishing during daylight.
There’s an annual close season from 15 March to 15 June inclusive, with fishing available all year outside those dates. Water-sports activity can restrict where and when you fish, so checking the current rules before clipping up is a must. The Brick Culvert swim also has a specific casting rule: cast straight out, with the water to the left out of bounds.
This is a big park water, not a tucked-away puddle. Public paths, car parks, toilets and waterside facilities are available, though they may not sit right next to every peg. Keep everything tidy, respect other park users and remember the 40lb keepnet limit. Pick a sensible swim, watch the park activity and there’s a cracking spread of fishing to get stuck into.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Willen North
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.
