The full rundown on Milton Pits

Milton Pits sits at Milton Country Park near Cambridge and is managed directly by Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust. It’s a private, members-only setup, so ordinary day tickets aren’t available. This is a membership job rather than a turn-up-and-pay-a-quid venue.

There are four named waters: Todd’s Pit, Dickerson’s Pit, Deep Pool and Hall’s Pool. Todd’s is the most popular and is generally considered the easier lake to fish. It’s known for specimen carp, with the largest reported mirror at 43lb and more typical big catches reported at 35lb or more. Proper lumps, then.

Todd’s can get busy between March and September because it shares the site with watersports activities. If you fancy a quieter session, Dickerson’s Pit sounds the more relaxed option. It’s the largest lake in the park, is only occasionally used for activities and is particularly popular for pike. Common carp over 30lb have also been caught there.

Deep Pool is connected to the northern end of Dickerson’s and reaches nearly 28 feet in the middle. It’s more sheltered and generally less weedy than Dickerson’s, with mirror carp, pike and bream on the cards. That extra depth should give you something to think about, especially as conditions change through the year.

Hall’s Pool is the smallest water and has a large dipping platform. It’s often used for educational fishing and holds crucian carp, tench and rudd. Silverfish membership includes Hall’s Pool, while annual carp and silverfish membership covers all four lakes.

Membership runs on set periods, with annual, winter and silverfish options available. You buy online, then collect the membership book from the park office with proof of purchase, address, an Environment Agency rod licence and photo ID. New members also need a passport photograph. Concession anglers need proof of eligibility.

There’s a solid rulebook, so get your kit and approach sorted before heading down. Only designated numbered or named swims are allowed, three rods is the maximum with the right licence, and specimen anglers need proper fish-care kit. Overnight fishing is allowed for anglers aged 18 or over, subject to the three-nights-on, three-nights-off swim rule. Bob on for a focused syndicate-style campaign, but not a casual day-ticket bash.
