The full rundown on River Great Ouse

The Littleport–Ten Mile Bank stretch of the River Great Ouse is a proper Fenland river venue near Ely. It’s controlled by the London Anglers’ Association, with almost 10 miles of fishing on both banks according to the LAA. The 2024 handbook describes more than 14 miles of practically fishable water, so there’s a fair old bit to get your head around. This is not a tiny put-and-take puddle where every peg looks the same. It’s a big, open river with plenty of water to explore.

The stretch starts around 60 yards above Littleport High Bridge and runs towards Ten Mile Bank. On the west bank, the boundary reaches Low’s Farm at Ten Mile Bank, while the east-bank boundary reaches Modney Drove at Southey. The river is wide, slow and deep in this area, which gives you several angles to think about. Before settling in, it’s worth taking a proper look at the swim, checking the margins and watching for any obvious changes in depth or flow.

Bream and quality roach are reported from the stretch, with perch also listed in the LAA handbook. Pike are present too and can reach good sizes, so there’s scope for both peaceful float or feeder sessions and something a bit more toothy. Zander are a specific night-fishing target here, making the after-dark option a proper part of the venue’s appeal rather than an afterthought. Take the kit that matches your plan, and avoid dragging the whole tackle shop over the flood bank if you’re going walkabout.

Night fishing is permitted at Littleport–Ten Mile Bank without an additional charge, according to the LAA. That could suit anglers targeting zander and other species after dark. As with any new river, it pays to ask the bailiff or fishery keeper about the best access point, current conditions and any local rules before getting set up. A quick chat can save a fair bit of faff, especially on such a long stretch.

Access is practical in plenty of places, with good road access at many points and parking available beside the river or on access roads. Park without causing an obstruction. Some swims need a walk over the flood bank, so travel light and bring only the gear you actually need. The surrounding area is very flat and exposed to wind, so check the forecast, take suitable clothing and make sure your tackle is secure. Overhead power cables cross parts of the fishery, and fishing is prohibited within 30 metres of them. That’s one to check before unpacking, not after.

A £6 day ticket is reported for the Ten Mile Bank section, obtained from bailiffs on the bank. The LAA page also says day-membership tickets are available for Littleport–Ten Mile Bank, with the handbook describing tickets from the fishery keeper on the bank. You’ll also need the necessary Environment Agency rod licence. Littleport railway station is about a quarter of a mile from the fishery, while Hilgay station is around one and a half miles away. Local facilities mentioned by the LAA include a tackle shop, pubs, bars, shops and a fish-and-chip shop — handy if the session turns into a proper Fenland mission.
