The full rundown on Bridgewater Canal – Runcorn Stretch
The Runcorn stretch of the Bridgewater Canal runs from Waterloo Bridge through to Preston Brook Marina. LDAA describes it as just over 4 miles long, while an older listing puts it at roughly 4.5 miles. Either way, there’s plenty of towpath to explore and a fair few pegs to sniff out.
This is canal fishing, so forget neat little commercial-lake swims. The water is shaped by bridges, moored boats, lily pads and the urban surroundings. Those features can be proper fish-holders, especially when you’re moving along and checking the margins rather than sitting on the first peg you find.
The species list is a tasty one. Carp, pike, bream, tench, roach and perch are all known from the stretch. LDAA reports carp over 30 lb, pike well over 20 lb, bream over 8 lb, tench over 8 lb, perch over 3 lb and roach over 2 lb. That’s a decent spread, whether you fancy a float, feeder, lure or a proper lump hunt.
Summer boat traffic is part of the deal, although LDAA says it rarely disrupts feeding fish. Moored boats, bridge areas and lily pads give you useful water to read, but there are specific distances to respect around bridges and boats. Keep your eyes open, fish sensibly and don’t get in the way of the public.
Fishing is from the towpath only, with night fishing allowed. The towpath must stay clear, so rods, poles, kit and bait need to be kept tidy. This isn’t a venue for spreading half the tackle shop across the footpath. Travel light where you can and keep the swim bob on.
Access is through the relevant club permit, with LDAA controlling the stretch in partnership with Lymm AC. A free car park is available off High Street near Waterloo Bridge, with more parking along the urban length. Just don’t obstruct residents or commercial premises. No key is needed, and no separate Bridgewater day-ticket price is published.
For 2026, full LDAA membership is £26, senior citizen over-65 or disabled membership is £20, and junior membership up to age 17 is £3. Membership expires on 31 December 2026. Anglers aged 12 and over also need a valid Environment Agency rod licence. Check the permit position before setting off, then get clipped up and go hunting.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Main water
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On wide, open water the fish move about a lot — a decent bed of bait at range holds a passing group long enough to get a bite.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
