The lowdown
- The Rocks are the main event here, split into the Top, Middle and Bottom sections. Proper varied water, with salmon, trout and grayling opportunities depending on where you settle in.
- The deep channel under your feet is identified as a salmon lie, while the narrower part of the channel is a good taking point. Worth working carefully rather than charging through.
- The Rocks are very good fly water for salmon, but spinning and bait fishing are allowed there too. A handy bit of flexibility if conditions or preference change.
- The start of the Sand Hole is fishable and is described as good for spinning and bait fishing. It also offers trout and grayling sport with dry flies and Czech nymphs.
- Dwy Craig and Slaughter House Pool are both excellent salmon water on the fly. Slaughter House Pool is also good bait-fishing water, so there’s more than one way to approach it.
- From the Gull Stones to the sewage outlet, the Dee provides very good grayling and trout water. Bugs, spiders and dry flies are the named approaches here.
- Broken Bridge is excellent salmon water with a fly, while trout and grayling are also available. A cracking section to keep in the plan when you’re working through the beat.
- Access to Gull Stones is from the road out of Llangollen towards Trevor, turning onto the old railway line. Don’t obstruct farm access — easy enough, and keeps everyone happy.
- The rules are quite active on the bank: keep at least 20 yards apart where practicable, move downstream steadily at least a yard per cast, and remember salmon anglers have priority.
- No Sundays, no night fishing except for sea trout, and trout and grayling are fly-only upstream of the Chain Bridge Hotel. All salmon must be returned quickly.
Methods: Fly fishing is central, especially for salmon at the Rocks, Dwy Craig, Slaughter House Pool and Broken Bridge. For trout and grayling, use dry flies, Czech nymphs, bugs and spiders; bait and spinning are allowed in the stated sections, but spinning for trout and grayling is prohibited.
