The full rundown on Derby Canal
Pride of Derby Angling Association’s Trent and Mersey Canal fishery gives members roughly 12 miles of proper coarse fishing. It runs from the River Trent and Derwent confluence near Shardlow through to Stretton near Burton-on-Trent, with the club leasing the fishing from British Waterways, now Canal & River Trust. The club’s length excludes around 1.5 miles at Weston-on-Trent, so check the exact stretch before you chuck in.
This is classic canal angling, with roach, perch and gudgeon making up the bread-and-butter sport. There are better fish in the mix too, with chub to about 5 lb and bream to around 6 lb reported. That gives you plenty of options, whether you fancy a few hours with light float tackle or want to sit it out for something with a bit more shoulder.
Carp are the headline attraction for many anglers, particularly below Swarkstone Locks, where fish up to about 20 lb are frequently caught. The areas below locks have a strong reputation, while the boatyards around Shardlow are also noted as productive. Far-bank tree cover can be a cracking feature, so don’t just plonk yourself in the first open swim you find. Have a good look, watch for signs of fish and choose a peg with a plan.
Access varies along such a long canal. Some areas can be reached easily from marina car parks, and the club has locked car parks in two areas. Around 12 pegs near Swarkstone Locks are suitable for wheelchair users. It’s worth checking the club’s current access arrangements before travelling, especially if you’re taking plenty of kit or trying a new stretch for the first time.
This isn’t a normal day-ticket water, so you’ll need the right club ticket before fishing. An adult canal-only season ticket costs £25 for 2026–2027, available from Fishmania, Harvey Road, Derby, and Fishamania, Derby Road, Burton-on-Trent. The junior canal ticket costs £5 for 2026–2027 for anglers under 16, with parent or guardian permission. A full adult standard membership costs £100 for 2026–2027, with a £20 joining fee for new standard members. A gate key costs £10 where required.
For a first session, pack light float tackle for the roach, perch and gudgeon, then bring stronger gear if you’re targeting the bigger chub, bream or carp. Start by asking the club secretary or bailiff which stretches are currently fishing well and where you can park. Keep mobile, fish to visible cover where it makes sense and don’t leave baited rods unattended. Night fishing isn’t allowed, fishing from bridges is banned, and you must keep 25 metres clear of lock approaches and lock-landings tie-up areas. Two rods are normally the limit, with fixed bolt rigs and live bait prohibited.

- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
Venue rule: Fixed leads are banned here, so use a lead clip set to drop the lead or an inline lead.

- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.

- Bread flake or lobworm on a size 8 hook with a link leger.
- Keep low and quiet on the bank.
- In summer, try a free-lined slug or floating crust.
