The full rundown on Sawley Lakes
Sawley Lakes sits off Tamworth Road, Derbyshire, DE72 2HP, between Sawley and Shardlow. The complex is identified with Pride of Derby Angling Association rather than a separately branded Sawley Lakes website, so that’s the name to keep in mind when checking access and tickets.
There are three named waters here: Pride Lake, Redhouse Lake and Ully Gully pond. Pride Lake is reported at roughly 18 acres, while Ully Gully is a much tidier approximately 3-acre pond with an average depth of 5–6 feet. Redhouse Lake is part of the complex, though its size isn’t published in the checked information.
Ully Gully is the clearest option for anyone wanting a smaller, more manageable water. It holds roach, bream, tench, carp, pike and perch, giving you a proper mixed coarse bag of options. The fishery reports bream to about 5 lb and tench to about 8 lb, which is a decent bit of interest for a little pond.
Access at Ully Gully sounds particularly handy. There’s parking at both ends, staged fishing positions beside the access roadway, and the fishery says the areas near the parking are suitable for elderly or disabled anglers. That should make the short walk and general faff around the swim more straightforward.
The wider Pride of Derby waters contain the usual coarse suspects, including carp, bream, roach, tench, perch and pike. So, depending on the lake and the permitted section, there’s scope for everything from a relaxed mixed-species session to targeting a proper lump. The checked facts don’t give swim maps or detailed feature information, so it’s worth keeping the first session flexible.
There’s also an associated River Trent section, with bream, roach, chub and barbel. Faster water below Sawley Weir is reported to produce barbel above 12 lb, while slower, deeper reaches hold bream of 5–8 lb. That adds a cracking bit of variety, although river access and ticket arrangements should be checked before you sling a feeder in.
Pride of Derby lists day tickets, membership and joining information, with online purchase functionality for tickets or membership. Current prices and opening hours weren’t reliably available in the checked pages, and night fishing on the named Sawley lakes wasn’t confirmed. Best bet: check the official Pride of Derby information before travelling, especially if you’re planning a longer session or a cheeky overnight.
We're not sure on ticket prices here — we couldn't find reliable, up-to-date prices online, so give the fishery a ring or check their own site before you go.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Pride Lake
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.

carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
