The lowdown
- This is one of three Moreton Estate beats, but Lower Moreton is the simple one feature-wise: main River Frome only. No North Stream carrier here.
- The river is comparable in size to the middle Wylye, so expect a proper flowing river rather than a tiny chalkstream trickle. Lovely water to read and pick apart.
- Wading is essential on all the Moreton beats. Bring sensible kit and be ready to work from the river, rather than expecting an easy bank-side chuck.
- Fly fishing is the stated method, with the water offering brown trout and grayling through the season. There’s also a chance of sea trout or salmon.
- The Moreton fishing season runs from mid-May to 15 October. Lower Moreton is specifically closed from 1 April to 15 May under the 2026 price table.
- Early season dates are the premium window: from 16 May to 7 June, one rod or up to three anglers who know each other may book one beat.
- From 8 June onward, two anglers who know each other or larger groups are allocated both beats under the booking arrangement. The maximum group size is six rods.
- The booking page says one, two or occasionally three rods may fish the Moreton beats early in the season. Handy if you’re planning a small, tidy team day.
- Everything is strictly catch and release. So it’s all about good handling, a bit of wading and enjoying the runs without taking fish home.
Methods: Fly fishing only, with wading essential across the Moreton beats. Read the main-river runs and work the trout and grayling water carefully; sea trout or salmon are also possible.

Rigs & methods
- Typical approach, not confirmed at this stretch
Fly fishing to the flow
River trout hold where food is delivered by the current. Most trout waters are fly-only — check the rights holder's rules first.
How to set it up
- Upstream nymph or dry fly in the riffles and glides.
- Approach from downstream and keep low.
Typical kit: Rod: 8–9ft #4–5 · Tippet: light fluorocarbon or copolymer. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.
Bait to consider
- Flies only on most trout waters — check the lodge rules
- Bait/worm ONLY where expressly permitted
Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.
When it suits
Depends on the water's season and stocking — ask the lodge what's open.
